What version of Samba/smbclient are you using and of course whats the windows box running and has anyone run any fixes on it recently? :)

    OK,
the windows machine doesn't like being called by it's IP address - it's not it's netbios name. That's all it's really objecting to for now.

    What's the machine called?
set up its name in /etc/samba/lmhosts
You can also check it's availability using
    smbclient -L $netbiosname -I 192.168.1.1
(You should get a password prompt.)
This command will list the available shares.

Are you certain the share named hdd2 is set up in /etc/samba/smb.conf?
Are you sure you're not just using the local name of the disk partition?

Can you login on the windows box with the username linux and the poassword testy?

Have a try like this. (smbmount and mount -t smbfs take different numbers of slashes. You have the right number for smbmount.)

Use the smbmount command rather than mount with the type smb.

    smbmount //netbiosname/sharename /tmp/hdd2

should get things sorted, though going through the above checks first will make life easier.

    Good luck,
if it doesn't work, post straight back.

    NiallB
