When it gets past boot hit F8 ,you doing this blind so you may or may not see the safe mode screen ,start it in safe mode ,if you cant see it its the 3rd option so go down twice on the cursor .

Windows will laod in safe mode fix display reboot and should be ok.

    have nice holiday?

Try running it with the last known good hardware configuration (again from the F8 menu, unfortunately I can't remember which option it is if you're doing it blind!).

that saved my ass when i set a hard disk to use UDMA100 when it only had a 40 conductor cable, thus preventing windows from booting :)

Sorry merc bit wrong about placement.

    Windows Advanced Options Menu
    Please select an option:

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt

    Enable Boot Logging
    Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
    Debugging Mode

    Start Windows Normally
    Reboot
    Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Start Windows Normally will be the option highlighted so 3 taps down from that. or go up to last known good.

Ah crap i made a big long post earlier and its gone now.

At A/: type C:/bootlog.txt that will bring up a text file in DOS at the bottom will say the last thing loaded (or not loaded being the case).
Then you will know whats buggering up your PC.

You can use an XP cd and boot up or stick the HD into another PC and copy over anything you need as a last resort.
