There is a place in Dublin that does incredible work but I can't remember the name of it. Is it a bolt on or set neck?

You could try the guitar workshop

sadly its a set neck:( so theyde have to like cut it up which im kinda afraid of them doing

I've seen set necks being replaced before and it's not a small operation. Also, set necks on their own are next to impossible to find unless you know someone who can build you one.

aww crap although my friends dad is a carpinder so mabye he could do it still thats kinds crap

Don't mean to insult your dads mate, but luthier is not the same as carpentery. Making a fretboard is a specialist skill in itself.

oh i didnt know that i though it was all the same......hey do you know any shops that would like keep necks you know like to replace peoples old ones

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

TBH, if anyone got a neck replaced, the old neck is only good for fire wood. I do know a guy in Dublin who makes guitar necks. I'll give him a shout later, see if he can do anything for you.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I don't actually know his number. I know him through the net.

That thing at the end is for attaching files, like pictures or zip files.

ok if u wanna see thecrapy work my dad did on the frets i can take a pic and post it i think

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Please do. I thinking that the neck could still be repaired. Could be restraightened and refreted. Much easier than replacing the neck.

TBH, those frets are repairable and I can't see any problems with the neck from those photos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Cheeky monkey

well the neck is bent sideways so u have to bend the frets when your putting them in thats the main problem

ps u now alot about guitars

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Bent sideways as in towards the thicker strings? That's repairable too but not easily.

Ah, it's easy enough to understand guitar things.

i was thnking of trying to do it again during the summer because i have the next 2 and a half mabye 3 months off......how would u go about repairing that anyway

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Well, depending on the severity of the bend, I'd just clamp the neck straight. If the fret board was borked, I'd replace it probably. It all depends on the severity. Can you get a head on picture of the guitar so I can see how much of a bend there is?

what do u mean by head

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

No, I mean looking straight at the neck so I can see the curve on the neck compared to the strings.

do want me 2 take out one of the bent frets and take a pic

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah, spose you may as well. The fact that they can be easily taken out isn't good :dunno:

    all sent
    are fret boards cheap?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Depends if you want them cut for frets, what material, radius, etc.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Cheeky monkey

oh ok so what do u think about the pics

does the boards chat room work because i think that would be easier to talk in

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hang on a second. Do you mean bend in the fret as in the radius???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Cheeky monkey

ye bbend it at the sides so it looks like a bent 1

ye but mabye a bit more

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Ah ffs, all electric guitars are like that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Cheeky monkey

then how come when i went to waltons and got the frets they where all straight

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Because frets are made straight. You have to radius them before you put them into a guitar.

You get some radius gauges and find the radius of the fret board.
Level the fret board using the correct radius block
    Install frets correctly
    Level frets

You now have a nice, refretted guitar. Fretting is not an easy task by any means. You should have gotten an old piece of **** neck to practice on first!

Not really. Check my version of Mario in the "Check this guy out" thread. That was done with a 505-2 directly into a pc.
