    What's the rush ?..

Is it just me, or is everything and everyone trying to ' Go faster' these days ?..

Faster computers, faster software connections, faster food, faster cars, faster bloody everything .

Stop the world, I want to get off.

Why are we not stopping to smell the roses anymore ?.. It's driving me nuts, in fact I think it already has :dunno::eek:

Paddy may well be the point on which the Euthanasia debate hinges.

It's become a bit of a cliché to say that things are getting faster nowadays but it only applies if you pick a certain type of lifestyle. The post-grad student life is still as chilled-out as it ever was for me, I take time with food because it's worth doing so, I use public transport and I can tell you that Irish buses are certainly not getting any faster, etc. Even if you have long working hours, you can take time to chill if you plan your time well. As for computers getting faster and net access speeding up - that actually relieves stress coz you don't have to wait ages anymore to download boards and other interwebby stuff.

What you said did sound like an ad, Paddy - it reminds me of cider or powdered soup ads in fact!

    bugler,

Very astute. As I do believe in voluntary euthanasia.

Faster release from incurable terminal suffering, where appropriate ?.. without wishing to go off subject.

The feeling that faster 'is better', Is a con, and unnatural and unhealthy IMO ?...

Dude your getting old, I know i will feel the same when I get older but for now i may mock the aged!

Ah yes! But then one could propose that all this accelerated living has freed up extra time for other activities that before could only have been dreamt about.

Why I'd imagine my own rose smelling participation has increased at least three-fold since the advent of broadband and the phone-in pizza.

It's all about greed... more money, work harder, move faster, dentist wants to kick you out the door ASAP so he can fill his chair with another cash-cow... that's right keep them coming, don't stop... I want more, there's never enough, I want money - yes lots of money... oh but I want a family aswell, gotta juggle as many things as I can at once in my futile struggle for fullfilment.
Some day we'll all realise that it's pointless and go back to living in the woods picking berrys... that's if there's any woods left by the time we're finished "gathering".
It's just the way things go Paddy, but don't let them dictate your pace of life, fight the power and keep it real.
    tbh

    Tenshot,

Nice interesting link that :) .

    SantaHoe,

Yeah, I'm with you. Although it's not my pace of life that I am now most concerned about. It's those around me, who are not even aware that they have become addicted to speed i.e. must rush here, must rush there, must have my mobile phone with me always. No time to listen too the silence, what a shame, what a waste.

bizmark: Strikes me as an example. IMO he/she is like the condemned ship, already sinking but refusing to recognise the true harsh reality. ;)

    Rubbish, Paddy!

How exactly does the speed of computers, or internet connections affect how you go about your day? Anyone with a bit of common sense would avoid fast food anyway... And faster cars? Are you living on the same planet I am? With all the new driving regulations, lower speed limits, more traffic congestion and more oh-so shocking ads on tv, I was under the impression that cars were getting exceptionally slower... But maybe I've just got my head stuck in the sand?

Honestly, none of those things affect the pace at which you live your life. If your PC boots in 3 seconds, there's nothing stopping you from making a cup of coffee, and chilling out, or maybe going outside and smelling that rose you've a hard-on for.

This has to be the most downright stupifying thread I've seen on after hours for a long time.
    It's a complete non-issue!

I agree with paddy, too many people want everything right now, no more waiting patiently enjoying life, instead everyone seems to be rushing through it.
When you get to the end what will you be saying? Life is too short to run through it, a nice stroll though sounds good to me ;) All good things come with time etc...

And 15 million stressed-out, grumpy f*ckers sticking to rigidly-planned agendas and obsessed with time and speed...

I blame the internet, all that information just waiting, begging to be ingested fastafastafasta!
Can't remember the last time I listened to a whole album from start to finish or played the same game for more than half an hour.

That Erin soup ad pisses me off.
Drink our crappy powdered soup and everything will be like it was in the "good old days"

What prices will drop dramatically, sportsbars will devolve into pubs, the price of a pint will plummet, as will the price of cigarettes, the smoking ban will be repealed, €ircon will become Telecom Eireann, Tesco will become Quinsworth, those gouging Centra arsehole shop will go back to the field where you used to play, and all those sycophantic yuppie scumbags with their cappachinos and their annoying pseudo-D4 accents wouldn't even exist...

tbh if a soup could do all that I'd drink it till I dropped.

    Karl Hungus,

Quote you; " But maybe I've just got my head stuck in the sand ?. End quote.

    You sure have ;)

    Beat, Has got the picture.

Exit, Seems a tad confused, reading things incorrectly and out of context , and The Beer Baron knows exactly what I am on about.

Never mind. Someday, you will just have to take your head out of your arse ! Oh, very sorry  I meant sand.

maybe if you weren't on the internet you would have more time for roses :)

I think I see what your saying though, my take on it is that ppl are getting too materialistic (sp?), everyone is trying to live the "full" life by trying to earn loads of money, with a huge house, three cars, a villa in spain, have family time, have hobbies, have social nights etc.... and while it is possible to have most of it you just need to bring things down a little. Don't get so stressed, earn enough to get by, we don't need mansions or villas.
    be happy

You might find this interesting Paddy20

    In Praise of Slow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,967 ✭✭✭✭Zulu

Your not the first to notice this - there is a name for the phenomon - Future Shock.
Theres a socology book written (Future Shock), you might be interested to read.
Warning: it's boring - very hard read, but some interesting points, some rubbish, but you're bound to get that with a book written in the 60's/70's.

Still trying to work out if it was worth reading or not. But I had plenty of time in a hommock in Fiji.

    pork99,

Thanks for that link to what looks like an excellent book from Amazon [In Praise of Slow]. I am ordering it along with another title: 50 facts that could change the World.

Maybe I am not as mad as I thought. Others appear to be concerned about the 'Speedaholics' as well.

    Zulu,

I will look up your suggestion, the book entitled "Future Shock", must take things 'one leisurely step at a time' though ;)

there aint enuf paddy for us all...

Ever wonder...(time for some pseudo mental probing)

That we are going faster and faster in life so we might in a metaphorical sense outrun death...We might possess so much physical wealth that we would live forever in our accomplishments in our gains in wealth and knowledge and many many offspring (course your more likely to succeed in this if you went slow). Or maybe in a physical sense outrun death by pushing the barrier of human achievement of taking every pill which science has promised to ensure longer life and cleaner bowels, to be prepared for every disaster. Then maybe death will miss us, those who have achieved the most by running the fastest...

The poem Ozymandius comes to mind so clearly here...

    Or do you ever wonder...(again)

That we could go so fast in life that we might miss not life but death itself, that when our physical self dies and rots away or spiritual/mental/religous self goes so fast that we enter the next level unprepared and we are lost to the great beyond not learning that little whisper which allows people to pass peacefully...
[Blitz's Big Black Book of words and pictures p12]

Oh man...Who needs weed when you have a mind like this...

    6am is the happy hour

    I'm with Paddy,

It's very easy to get caught up in the rush like everybody else until you realise they're not actually rushing in any particular direction. It always amuses me when I see somebody run out in front of the oncoming traffic trying to cross the road. I like my job but there's no way in hell I'm going to risk my life in order to get there 30 seconds earlier. And if somebody pushes in ahead of me getting on the train? Well I just let them. If they want the ulcer, they can have it.

I love technology & gadgets & all the new toys this era has given us, but at the same time I'm pretty sure I work longer hours and see less of my family than my grandfather did. Technology hasn't given me that.
