Does anyone know if Euro 2004 will be shown in 16:9 on BBC and ITV?

I remember people here being disappointed that the World Cup 2002 wasn't in Widescreen, but surely it must be this year?

    I should have searched first!

I found the answer here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=1684607#post1684607
I read on ukgold teletext a couple of days ago that the matches at Euro 04 will all be broadcast from the portuguese tv company in 4:3 not widescreen. Apparently the beeb were trying to negotiate widescreen broadcasts with them for a year but they werent having it. Pity. We'll have to wait for World Cup '06 I think.

    :(

Yeah, not all countries are as advanced as the UK in terms of widescreen programmimg.

I wonder if RTE, TG4 and TV3 are making any advances towards broadcasting in widescreen or making programmes in the format.

Those black sides on the Beeb aren't great!!!
On the other hand why do I have a full screen on Dutch TV with none of those black stripes?? Just wondering!!!:confused::confused:

I'd imagine the World Cup in Germany in 2006 will be widescreen alright. I think the Dutch national broadcasters are in widescreen too.

    Hello Greenman.
    Long time no see.

You must be looking at Ned 2 on cable !!

The cable company Essent send their own feed from Portugal.Without getting techincal ( or bull****ting) they have basically changed the format to 16/9 and then sent the feed here to Holland.

On Ned 2 with satellite it is in 4/3

As you can image sales of Widescreens TVs have shot throught the roof here for the Football.

You can be sure that Philips are helping them with the techincal side of the operation to send the changed format :D

    Hi to you Seano.
Nice of you to reply to my question.

Yes Sean I am looking at the full screen of Ned 2 on the cable and very happy to do so!!!
BBC here on cable and sat has those black borders.
BBC on the cable has 4 black borders and BBC on sat has the 2 black vertical borders.

I'll be watching the matches on Ned 2 and getting my sound from BBC TV or Radio 5 Live!!!

Thanks alot and tot ziens!!!:) :):)

Nice effort by the beeb on the interactive bit. Shame I have to switch the TV back to 4:3 to avoid the nasty box effect.

Greenman, you're in Belgium if I remember correctly. Do you know why the TV1/Canvas aren't broadcasting Euro 2004? Is it a case of sour grapes because they're not taking part or is it on another Belgian channel. The reason I ask is because the main Belgian football commentator is one of my favourite commentators, along with the Belgian Tour de France commentator.

The BBC are really wasting everyone's time broadcasting a 4:3 picture inside a 16:9 broadcast. It reduces the resolution and makes people's eyes go wonky.

    Hi Lennoxschips,
No sour grapes here in Vlanderen. They VRT ie the Flemish RTE organised a seperate sports channel for a summer of sport cycling, soccer and tennis. They put this channel on the mosaic www.sporza.be ,
So Lennoxschips I hope this was of help!!!:) :):)
Couldn't watch the 4:3 on my TV but the wife always puts on the 4:3 when she watches the big TV!!!

The resoultion is exactly the same, the pictures going to the BBC from the host broadcaster are 4:3, not really a lot they, or ITV can do.

I have to write to my Dutch cable company so I can get Sporza. That looks excellent.

If you live in the south you can get it with a Digital T receiver.

Unfortunately I don't. Sometimes I can receive the excellent radio station Studio Brussel on a clear day, albeit with lots of background fuzz. Belgian radio and tv really puts the Dutch to shame.

I looked at the Sporza website and it looks like a great channel.
