Get as much practical experience as possible, and show a real interest in computers such as learning stuff in your own time and working on your own personal projects. It really makes you stand out above the other graduates.

There seems to be plenty of opportunities for good graduates, lots of companies offer placements for graduates in particular so I wouldn't be too worried about getting a job.

It probably depends what kind of job you might be looking for... if you're going to be very picky about it then you won't find exactly what you want straight away. You can get a job doing something related and work your way to what you want after some experience.

I hear there are support jobs going in Dell lately, it could be worth your while getting a job there for the summer. It'll look well on a CV, showing that you have both personal interest and a small amount of professional experience.

I got a job okay, but a lot of my friends did not find it so easy and eventually wound up taking tech support jobs etc! When I say easy I got numerous rejections(over thirty) before I got a job! The advice about the internship is good, I did a three month internship the summer before my final year and was asked about it quite a lot in interviews

However since then I left work and have gone back to do a PhD, but I do miss the money from working!

bugger me, the amount of comp advise ive gotten off you and your only in 2nd year! if you've that amount of knowledge now and you keep up your effort level it should come across welll and have no problem.

as was said before see if you can get a dell/eircom tech support job in the summer. (if you want a few pointers on eircom drop us a pm.)

i got a job after a couple months looking, and working tech support for the summer. current job is not the best paid in the world but its relevent and i love it. really relaxed working environment. in saying that theres people from my class who got top marks who struggled to get a relevant job. experience is the key, if you can get any experience at all, take it. it means you might not have to start at the bottom when you graduate.

also if you fancy a place on a graduate program for a large company, then look up the dates now, as they tend to do preliminary interviews/tests the year before they actually hire ya.

I completed my degree appox 12 months ago. Worked in a tech support role for a big mobile company for about 2 years throughout college. Once I graduated, I just worked a 39 hour week here while I applied for jobs and waited for something to come up. It tool me about 6 months after I graduated to get proper job (albeit about a month of that in total was genuinely trying)... Wasn't that daunting of an experience. TBH, after 4 odd years of college you learn to adapt to new situations fairly quickly and working was one of the easier things I had to get the hang off....

PS:. I still maintain that the hardest thing about college is having very little cash, otherwise its a piece of piss with a little effort. Work on the other hand rewards you well for your hard work. Trust me, its easy to make the move!
