Athlon Quick question

I recently bought an AMD Athlon 2400+ CPU and Motherboard. However when i boot up windows and look at the hardware profile, it lists my CPU as an Athlon 1800+ . Does windows do this anyway, or do i need to change the Dipswitches on the Motherboard to send more voltage or whatever to the chip? Does anyone know what voltage should be sent to full power an 2400+?

    Thanks

    gar

    depends on the mainboard.
if you were fortunate enough to buy an abit mobo, boot into the bios and enter the softmenu III menu. everything you need is in there.

are you sure its not listing the clock speed of the processor rather than the model number? (should be roughly 1800mhz for a 2400+ afaik)

    /edit
that's presuming that you've got a barton core processor

most mobos default to lesser speeds, check your CPU as tman said you have to be sure of what you have before you set the fsb.

    a 2400XP is 2.0ghz
its kinda silly but sounders cooler i suppose, my 2400XP defaults to 1.633 if i dont change anything in bios.

I found the manual and it lists 3 different ways of setting the Dipswitches

    1 - CPU: 100Mhz
    2 - CPU: 166.67Mhz
    3 - CPU: 133.33Mhz

Any idea which one it should be set to for a 2400+ ? Its set to 100Mhz at the moment

    Dip switches? Quaint ;)

    Your CPU's FSB speed should be 133 afaik. (133*2 = 266mhz DDR)

d'oh. i was thinking of a barton core 2400XP. (which doesn't seem to exist outside of the mobile variation)

Still dont see how its showing up as an Xp1800+ (1.53ghz) ........ ahh well the jumper should definetly be set to 133mhz.

Actually the Xp2400+ @ 100mhz FSB runs just over 1.5ghz which could explain it.

it could also be that 1800+ is the fastest cpu that your mainboard can support (the mention of "dip switches" brought this to mind)

because its reading the chip as an 1800xp, presumably because thats the speed of the chip currently. when the fsb is changed it will pick it up as a 2400xp

    have you tried bios?

btw, it should say MHZ rather than thr model number, my XP2000+ was listed as 1250MHz, when guys here told me to change the settings in the bios to 133, it changed to xp2000+
