    Hey posting here again heh

Ok I had this problem a while ago. I formatted my drive but it still hasnt gone away. Before I send the hard drive back was wondering if anyone was familiar with it.

CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.
volume C is in use by another application

I've done this with disk checker and chkdsk same problem arises. But when I do a quick chkdsk (1/3 stage one) it runs most of the time (Other times it gives the above message).

I cant run the full one that repairs etc. I'm on Windows2k, I just formatted hte HD the other day and it gave the same error even when it was a fresh install.

    Any help ?

Tried testing with the utilies disk that the HD amkers provide?

May be buggered on a certain track. Think you have no Floppy so extract the image and make a bootbale cd with in nero.

What do you mean, you can't run the full one?

What does it say when you do a chkdsk /r ?

    Sorry,

That is what I mean by a "full one"

I get the error I stated in the original message when I do that after being prompted do I want it to run after the reboot.

    The error is

CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.
volume C is in use by another application

Have a wee look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;218461

You might also want to disable any anti-virus stuff you have that could be loading as the machine starts up.

Are you tring to run chkdsk from a dos window within windows? ie did you do start > run > chkdsk or start > run > command and type in chkdsk in the dos window ?
If so, it will not work. You have only "shelled out" of windows, it is still running in the background. That's why Volume C is in use.
Make a boot floppy, with chkdsk on it. Boot from floppy and then run checkdsk in true Dos.
If you don't know how how to make the disk, put in the windows setup disk and restart you pc. When you are offered the option to press F3 to exit from setup - take it and you will drop out to DOS. Then run chkdsk.

    Good luck.
