Yeah, I've had RH9 installed on a second partition for ages now, but it's annoyed me (actually, it's my hardware's fault), and I haven't used it enough at all.

Can anyone recommend a good book to guide me through some UNIXy stuff with FreeBSD, like compiling/setting up servers, up to compiling new kernels etc?

Also, is there anyone around willing to burn me a copy of it (5.2 is the latest distro innit?), for exchange of blank CDR's?

    :)

    Where are you?

Best documentation for Freebsd is the handbook, on www.freebsd.org

I'm in Dublin. Thanks for that. I'll convert it to PDF, and see if I can find a way to print a ridiculous amount of pages.

Seamus, I'd say start with FreeBSD 4.10 first. Version 5 is still not fully recommended yet. Also, as Baud said, the FreeBSD handbook is definately the way to go.

    Excellent, cheers lads.

And that handbook came to 800 pages, so I think I'll just print out the first few :D

The 5.x branch is getting very close to a stable release now, and its perfectly acceptable as a work station OS. In fact I had it running on a production server and it never gave any trouble.

Theres quite a long list of new features but 5.x seems to be better for supporting newer hardware.

    as the expressions goes....
"Linux is Unix written for PC's by PC hackers, *BSD is Unix written for PC's by Unix hackers"

TBH i've never really used any of the BSD's much but from what i've seen they remind me alot of IRIX, apart from fact they don't got the same gfx goodness :D
