This error is happening on a FreeBSD 4.9 stable release machine with RAID 5. Does this sound like a buggered disk to anyone?

Yup, definately indicates a disk on its last legs :)

Is you sure it's not ram?

page_error sounds like some sort of memory fault... maybe if it is hard disk, the section of hard disk that's foobared is holding swap space?

He was trying to trick you with the phrase "with RAID 5". Single dead non-RAID disk.
