    Big development charge differences
    June 08, 2004 09:07

The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland says it has found disparities in the way local authorities apply the new development contribution scheme to be introduced by all local authorities by March 10.

Under the new scheme, domestic and non-domestic developments are liable for contributions to fund infrastructure.

The CCI has carried out a survey of 34 authorities which shows that Limerick County Council and Dublin County Council levy the highest charges, at €116.55 and €110 per square metre respectively. The lowest charge of €6.98 is in Donegal.

Chief executive John Dunne said the CCI was not opposed in principle to the charges, but he said the process for calculating them was not as transparent as the Environment Minister had indicated when introducing the scheme.

He added that the Department did not provide a specific method for calculation, and the general guidelines had led to significant differences.
