ok I just ordered 2 dvds from japan.
ive tried playing them on 2 dvd drives an lg and pioneer, on linux and windows.
    Both fail

    mplayer gives the usual error

============ Sorry, this file format is not recognized/supported =============
=== If this file is an AVI, ASF or MPEG stream, please contact the author! ===

furthermore attempts to make isos with mkisofs or copy with
    dd if=/dev/hdc
    or
    mkisofs -dvd-video /mnt/dvd/ > /iso

    all yield

    0ÃhÑ£Fmxtermxtermdd: reading `/dev/hdc': Input/output error
    1152+0 records in
    1152+0 records out

im totally confused, acidrip and dvdrip also fail , infact crash , and i need to reset the jumpers on the lg dvd drive for it to be detected at boot. heh

like i was saying windows is the same, powerdvd fails, and so does the ati player, ive also checked the region info, the lg one has 4 changes left, although i think its unlocked cause ive played 100's of dvds (most japanese on it). And the pioneer one reports as unlocked.

so anyone have a clue? do i just need a new dvd player, are there some dvds that just dont work on computers, you got to have a tv player? if so that sucks. anyway, thax for your time, i hope somone knows somthing about this

Have you tried these in a set-top player? Maybe they're just buggered.

try mplayer most asian dvds i bought were actually VCDs ina weird format but mplayer either played them or found the format.

not Media player 9/10 but the older one type "mplayer" into run box.

Media player classic? Seems to play just about everything.

    Solved.
ok well im not exactly sure what went wrong, but i re emerged libdvdcss (so it was an encryption prob), and then installed dvdbackup. This is a nice commandline ripping utility, and it worked straight off for both dvds. v. strange that it i couldn't play them before ripping, and even more strange that dvdrip and acid rip couldnt rip em, even though i have ripped a whole load of dvds on both of those without any encryption problems.
and now im just after encoding both dvds on the wrong framerate, :( god damn you ntsc
and way thanks guys for yer time, ;)

Japanese dvds are region 2 aswell, just NTSC not PAL.
