Shuttle SN45GV2 freezing at random

    'Lo,

Got myself a new SN45GV2 there on Friday, together with an XP2800, 160GB Maxtor HDD and NEC 2500A DVD Writer and added it to the 512MB RAM I already had.

All seemed well when I got it running on Friday with Win2k. When I turned it back on on Saturday it started completely freezing up at random. Sometimes it would freeze when clicking a link in Firefox, other times it would freeze with just Winamp running (as I'm typing this Winamp is kinda skipping :/) I left it running completely idle for about 45mins without any freeze-ups.

So I decided to install XP Pro, as my Win2k install was a bit wonky. No luck, it was even freezing up during the install.

Luckily for me, the schmucks I ordered from delivered everything twice (without charge... yet). So I stuck in the 2nd XP2800 thinking maybe the first was borked (it wasn't overheating, steady at 45-49 Celsius.)

Seemed to be fine for a few hours... but then the same thing started happening. The latest freeze came when switching USB devices.

So this (along with Winamp freezing, onboard sound and all) would indicate a motherboard problem, oui? I have the other shuttle that they delivered here and am considering testing it, but I don't want them charging me twice because I used it... so if anyone can think of any other possible solutions before I break it open it would be mucho appreciated.

    Ta...

(Btw, I've tried using one stick of RAM at a time, but it still froze up).

Try disbaling the USB ports for a bit and check if there bios upgrade for the bios that deals with USB ports.

You checked the ram and tried 2 OS so its definitly hardware related. is there an onboard LAn or sound that may be conflicting or not working right?

    incorrect CPU settings in bios?

And also is the power supply big enough for the new equip?

    Cheers for the suggestions lads.

There is onboard sound and LAN but device manager shows no problems anywhere.

I've set the FSB to 166, as the manual says, which shows the CPU as a 2800+ in the BIOS (it was set to 1250Mhz by default).

The PSU is a 250w Silent X PSU which is one of the most powerful Shuttle PSU's around atm, and a lot of people have more demanding stuff running off it than I have!

Firstly: If they don't realise that they shipped everything twice, i'd be interested in buying the CPU, if you're selling...

Secondly, have you run memtest? It could be ram problem. Try using the chip in different slots.

After that, disable/remove as much as possible, and try booting with 1HD, grpahics, and 1 stick of ram. See if its stable then.
