Ports closed, but no firewall?!?

    Just ran my computer through Shields Up! and its showing me quite a few closed ports, even though i have no firewall running (as far as i can tell).

    The WinXP firewall is off (i think) and i uninstalled my previous firewall just in case that was doing it. What can i do?

    EDIT: Practically everything is showing up as "closed". Should they not be showing up as mostly being "open" considaring i have no firewall whatsoever.

    Stupid question but I assumed you're not behind a router at all? You have a direct connectionto the internet?

    Silly question but why do you want open ports anyhow? You trying to set something up?

    Ideally you should be coming up as fully stealthed onall those tests. Thanks for posting that site tho, I'd been looking for it for a while.

    Direct connection.

    Ethernet card->Ibb box-->Antenne.

    It was working perfectly up until i reinsatlled windows today, and tried Kerio Winroute Firewall.

    EDIT: I want the ports all open, because without a firewall they should all be open (shouldn't they?). So the fact that they are not open then i have my firewall uninstalled means something is dodhgy.

    Ehm I dunno how the IBB setup is, but are you using NAT? If so that might explain why you seem to have ports closed

    theres no nat, theres no firewall, theres no routing, theres nothing. Its directly connected to the internet.

    A port will only be open if a program or service has them open. If you are running a web server it will keep port 80 open, otherwise it will be closed (as long as nothing else is using it).

    There is nothing unusual with having closed ports without a firewall (it's actually what you want).

    Ah right, i thought they were all open unless closed/stealthed. My mistake.

    I thought maybe my ISP was doing something dodgy, but obviously not.

    No, as stated, the port is only open if the service running designated to that port is running.
