This is question for a friend of mine. He's interested to know how he could receive
German Stations in Ireland and the UK.More importantly though he thinks he might be restricted in the size of the dish he puts up.Is it possible to receive any European stations without a dish?

For the German stations you need a satellite receiver and dish.
Many German stations are still available on the old analogue system these receivers are less than 40 E's new and they're are thousands of these receivers in atics all over Ireland. A 80cm dish will get you Astra 1 where many of the German stations are.If you went digital you could get it on a 45 to 60cm dish.
In short you need a dish to receive the German stations.
Trawl through this http://www.analoguesat.co.uk/ and if you feel you need more info drop back. BTW where is your friend located? :):):)

The Astra 1 satellite carries a shipload of German channels and can be got on a 60cm (or even smaller) dish either using a FTA reciever or a Sky digibox

You can modify a dish to have two (or more) LNB's
One for the Astra 1 (German) satellite @ 19 deg East
One for the Astra 2 (UK) satellite @ 28 deg East

And feed the cables from each LNB to the reciever box via a suitable switch

There are a couple of German channels on Hotbird (13deg E) as well but Astra 1 has a more channels and a stronger signal

http://www.satcodx2.com/0192/uke/ gives a list of channels on Astra 1

BTW DWTV is available Free to Air on Hotbird

    DW-TV is also free-to-air on Astra 19.2°

Is there any danger of the German channels currently broadcasting in analogue switching exclusively to digital in the near future?

    Nope.

Premiere have done so, but there is presently no hint that any other broadcaster will follow their example.

Not in the short term anyway.

The long-term digital complete switch-over plan is set for 2014.
