Keep getting messages like this on my desktop haven't noticed them coming up whilst using any specific app except IE maybe.

I recently changed from Win 98 SE to 2000 Pro and also changed from zonelabs firewall to Norton Internet security.

How do I stop these "messages" coming up

    Cheers

Go to network settings of internet connection & disable file & printer sharing.

This will get rid of these messages.

    Thanks JoePC

do a windows update at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for updates, patch all critical updates etc..

and get a firewall (pref. www.zonealarm.org) , there are free ones available, stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ is also recommended in conjunction with anti-virus software

    also try this -

    type

"dcomcnfg" in the run command under the start button in the bottom left hand corner of your screen..

then go to default properties and uncheck "Enable Distributed COM on this computer"

to improve security until you patch everything :)

Win 2000 pro was already fully patched just checked again. I'm running Norton antivirus 2002 in conjunction with norton internet security 2004 these are also fully pathced.

I unchecked "Enable Distributed COM on this computer", what affect will this have?

    cool,

Sometimes people may have other instances of the o.s. open for others to take advantage of like dcom so best to mention it..

if it wasn't fully updated (which you have :) ) it may be open to dcom exploits - which would mean attackers could have a full administrative DOS shell on your computer or even leave your pc open for use as an ftp server to launch sasser worm attacks.

    :)

just follow the instructions below it's spam been sent to your ip this will disable it from happening again

    1. Click Start button on your toolbar.
    2. Click Run...
    3. Enter "Services.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
    4. Browse the list till you find "Messenger" in Name column
    5. Right click and click "Stop" on the pop up menu. That is not all. If you don't want
the service to start the next time you start your computer, continue with the
    following steps:
    6. Double click it. The Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box comes out.
    7. Choose "Disable" in "Startup type" drop down box.
    8. Click OK.
