Power issues with new system

I recently decided to upgrade, so i went out and bought an "icute" case from Maplins, its modded with fans leds etc all that jazz, really nice case. then i went to IT direct and bought an Athlon 2300+ ( i think) and Asus X Motherboard. I had an old power supply (235Watt) so i wired it all up and nothing happened, the MB light lit up and the cpu fan spun once or twice then nothing. so i thought maybe there wasnt enough power so i got a loan of a 300 Watt PSU, same thing happened. Spun once or twice and stopped.
Im going to buy a 450 Watt PSU thoday, you think that will solve the problem??
Also! with the 300, if i wired everything up but remove the CPU, everything powers up perfectly, it seems that it only doesnt work with the CPU in there, any ideas?

Could be a faulty motherboard or even CPU.

It doesn't really sound like a lack of power issue.

i was thinking that myself, but everything is powering up fine without the CPU in, its when its in there thats when the problem arises. I dont think i have to set the MB up for the CPU do i? i should work straight off.
