Seeing as I can't find a second hand tuner and the footie is drawing near, I was going to order a basic tuner card from Elara.

But can anyone tell me is it possible to receive free to air digital channels without using an antenna (I was going to use a coat hangar anyways for the normal channels :D ) or would the reception be to bad?

Here's the one I was looking at

Whatever you can pick up on your TV coax you can pick up on your TV card (which for me is just the VCR but theres no reception in our area at all, its satellite or nada). They're pretty much exactly the same. There are top of the range TV cards that do DVB, but they're expensive (and pointless in Ireland AFAIK). To pick up satellite you'll need a dish (and decoder if necessary - unless you're running LInux).

That is basically of no use at all in Ireland. There is no Digital Terestrial TV here and recieving the UK service is only possible if you have a very good analogue tv reception from one of the few DTT transmitters in NI or Wales (only a very small number of people in tne border areas and on the south east coast can pick up these signals and that is with good hi-gain aerials)
