ON C4 at 10 is getting only 3 million viewers which can't be what the producers had in mind. E4 prolly has about 200,000 at any one time. They'll have to liven up the house alright. How about a "make a porn movie" feature?

    Ugly but compelling!

I'm following Aussie BB at the moment, and its 10 times better than the UK version. Its not jaded if you do it right! I'll post a separate topic about it later today.

I think C4 took out a contract for 2 more last year so that means there would be another series contracted for next year. I could be wrong but pretty sure thats what I read.

Also, according to the latest viewing figures it would appear C4 are reasonably satisifed. I have taken the liberty of posting the latest from media.guardian.co.uk which is registration required.

All in all, after so many years running it would appear to be still drawing a hefty viewership.

Millions tune in for reality battle

Big Brother 5: proving popular despite criticism

Reality shows Big Brother and Hell's Kitchen went head to head at the weekend - and though ITV's cookery show with Gordon Ramsay won the bigger audiences, the fifth series of Big Brother is already looking like another hit for Channel 4.

Big Brother has been dubbed predictable and boring by the Sun's resident irritant Richard Littlejohn because the 12 inmates include two gay men, one lesbian, one sex change contestant and two bisexuals - but more than 3 million viewers are already hooked, a figure likely to be good enough for Channel 4 bosses at this early stage.

The reality stalwart attracted 3.3 million viewers and a 15% audience share between 10pm and 10.35pm last night.

However, the Channel 4 show held its audience remarkably well against a special late Monday edition of Coronation Street, which was watched by 9.6 million viewers.

In 2003, the first Monday night edition of Big Brother attracted 3.4 million viewers and a 14% audience - against far less popular competition.

Big Brother 5 also had a ratings boost for its launch on Friday, coming after the record breaking final episode of Friends and attracting nearly 7 million viewers. Since then, audiences for Big Brother in peak time have dropped by around 50%.

ITV1 bosses will also be pleased with the progress of Hell's Kitchen, which saw its audience yo-yoing between less than 4 million viewers on Saturday night and nearly 8 million yesterday evening, when the show benefited from being sandwiched between two Coronation Street episodes.

Last night's edition, in which Gordon Ramsay continued training a series of celebrities to work in his kitchen, was watched by 7.8 million viewers and attracted a third of the audience between 9pm and 10pm, according to unofficial overnights.

The ITV1 reality show proved more popular than BBC1 drama Murphy's Law, which attracted 5.2 million viewers.

Hell's Kitchen's audience was undoubtedly boosted from being scheduled between two instalments of Coronation Street, featuring the ongoing fallout from Todd Grimshaw's decision to come out of the closet.

The reality show inherited 11.4 million viewers from Coronation Street at 9pm last night.

Hell's Kitchen and Big Brother were head to head between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday and Sunday night.

On Sunday evening, Hell's Kitchen attracted 4.9 million viewers and a 23% audience share, while Big Brother was watched by 3.7 million - a 17% share.

However, Hell's Kitchen was beaten by BBC1's terrestrial movie premiere, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, which attracted 5.4 million viewers. It was a rare victory for BBC1 over its rival in the Sunday 9pm slot.

By contrast, Big Brother proved more popular than the competition on BBC2 and Channel Five.

Five's Fighter Plane Dig was watched by 2.2 million viewers and attracted an 11% audience share, a very good result for this imaginative piece of history programming, but BBC2's Football Diaries could muster only 800,000 and a 4% share.

Hell's Kitchen hit its lowest audience of the series so far on Saturday night, when just 3.9 million viewers - one in five of the available audience - tuned in.

The ITV1 reality show lost out to BBC1's disaster movie repeat, Deep Impact with Morgan Freeman, which attracted 4.9 million viewers.

However, Hell's Kitchen was still more popular than Big Brother, which attracted 3.4 million viewers and a 17% audience share.

The other 9pm Saturday shows on terrestrial TV were BBC2's Arena arts documentary, Pavarotti - the Last Tenor, which attracted 2.5 million viewers, and Five's crime drama CSI: Miami, which attracted 2.4 million.

But Big Brother turned the tables on Hell's Kitchen on Friday night, with a little help from Friends.

The launch show was watched by 6.7 million viewers and attracted a 34% audience share between 10pm and 11.10pm, according to unofficial overnights.

Last year's launch was watched by 6.9 million viewers but only attracted a 29% audience share, because it was broadcast at 8.30pm in the evening, when more people are watching TV.

Big Brother had an inheritance of 8.6 million viewers from the final episode of long-running American sitcom Friends, which was up against Friday's edition of Hell's Kitchen between 9pm and 10pm.

Hell's Kitchen dipped to 4.1 million viewers and an 18% audience share.

However, the ITV1 show still proved more popular than BBC1's double bill of the Lenny Henry Show, which was watched by 2.9 million viewers, and Have I Got News For You, which attracted 3.9 million.

I think that big bro will not end till a long glong time. It's just so cheap to produce compared to other prime time stuff like who wants to be a millionaire, sure even the house isn't a real house, it's made out of wood.

Doubt that.... the cost of x cameras running 24 hours a day, plus the huge staff required to run the thing would surely mean that its pretty costly to run.

It's just a real life version of The Sims game (which is also bizzarely popular) ... A life for people with none of their own I think.

I personally can't stand it (or any of these "reality" shows to be honest)... but there's no escaping it while it's on - I'm thinking of adding "No I didn't see Big Brother last night" to the end of all my emails in work.

EDIT: Yes I appreciate the irony of sayin this in a BB thread on a BB forum :) THe title of the thread caught my eye from the main page you see :D

the worst thing is that the prize money is only £70,000 or something around that and US version had $500,000 . God channel 4 make that in a 30 sec add during a big brother eviction. Was watching a programme on channel 4 this morning and it was about how they make money and comission new programs and it was recorded just before big brother started last year. And it had there sales team selling adds during big brother time slots for 50,000 and up. The head of sales said channel 4 makes £700 million from ads a year and e4 makes about £30 million. So when u take into account all the millions they make from the phone lines too and then take away all the costs they have. How are they sooooo stingy, there just like the british lotto

I dont think increasing the prise money would make it any better. Even if it went to a 1M - it wouldnt make the contestants do anything more interesting just act weirder and more cagey and paranoid I guess.
What would be good would for them to be totally open and internet All the cameras 24/7 live and unedited/uncensered - it would be really like goldfish in a bowl.

That's the worst thing? Don't be ridiculous. If the prize was 16 cents and a half-eaten packets of Mars Bar you'd still have the muppets jostling to get in. Here's a better idea, take the prize money, advertisment money, merchandising money, etc, find five of the neediest charities or hospitals and give the money away to people that really need it!

Endemol have a contract with Elstree Film & Television Studios which will allow them to remain in the Borehamwood complex for another 4 years if nesscary, although this is no guarentee that the show will be recomissioned by CH4.

The location, whereas not ideal to the local residents (I know I lived in Borehamwood for two and a half years) the use of the large modern George Lucas Sound Studio and its proximity to any house built,(temporary structures as specified in Hertsmere Council's Planning permission) makes it ideal from a technical point of view, and does reduce production costs compared to the original East London Site.
