Sounds to me like explorer is corrupt i've seen similar probs a few times, if its xp try making your pc boot from the cd via the bios and slap your xp cd in!! you can run a restore from there and if that wont work i'm afraid it's gonna be a re-install,
    Sorry

    what os? XP i'm guessing

    any new programmes/hardware installed lately.

but it sounds like it could be something to do with the registry.

Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.
