Spent the day on the Blackwater in Fermoy yesterday, hadn't seen any rain for a while until Monday, so the water had risen slightly & added some colour.

Strangely devoid of the bigger roach & Dace that its known for, but EELS !!! - plagued the whole day with them. They took maggot, worm, sweetcorn & hemp - increased hooksize - still took it.

Anyone any Eel avoidance tips ???

    Andi.

ps...there was a full moon last night (or almost) I hear its supposed to make the eels more lively ? - any truth in it ?

Were you fishing on the bottom?? Thats usually where eels feed..

Try lifting your hookbait up a foot or so off the deck. This doesnt help if you are fishing for tench or bream as that's where you are going to catch them, but if theyre not your quarry then that should do.

I also read somewhere that throwing in a tin of cat/dog food with a couple of holes in, discracts their attention.

Just remember to keep it tied to something so that you can retrieve it when you are leaving..

Thanks - Blackwater is a bit of a tricky one as its nearly 12 feet deep in some places (especially the swim I usually fish).

The roach tend to stay fairly deep - beyond normal float depths & the overhanging trees make it even more difficult. It's one of those places where the rewards can be tremendous if you get to the fish, but its not without pain.
