Macintosh and UTV Broadband

Just asked UTV to check my line for BB.

As I have a mac, they are saying that I need to purchase an Ethernet modem (Zytel), that they can provide for €50 (in addition to the €99 connection fee).

I have read on these pages that they will take €30 off connection if no modem is supplied.

My question is, is it worthwhile to take pay them €150 for a modem and conneciton, or should I but the ethernet myself? Does anyone know whats the best price I can get for one of these?

    Cheers

you could just sign up with IOL, they provide a dual usb and ethernet modem without any charge and you can avail of their 4 month free promotion...

AFAIK if you sign up on the higher package you actually own the modem as well

So €40/month for DSL with an ethernet modem, or €30/month for DSL and you have to buy your own modem (for about €80-€120)).

Unless you can avail of one of the Esat bundles, it's probably still cheaper to go with UTV and buy your own modem.

Here's a list of items on Elara that provide various levels of functionality. (I just listed the first, by price, of each item that provides the specified functionality - basic ethernet "modem", ethernet+USB "modem", DSL router with 4 port switch, and DSL router with wireless support.

http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=ECE918622&productID=84946D-Link DSL-300T €80.31 Incl. VAT (plus delivery). Single port ethenet DSL "modem".

D-Link DSL-502T €89.04 Incl. VAT (plus Delivery). DSL "modem" with ethernet and USB ports.

D-Link DSL-504T €124.06 Incl. VAT (plus delivery). ADSL Router with built in 4 port ethernet switch.

Belkin F5D7630UK4A €133.61 Incl. VAT (plus delivery) ADSL Router with 4 Port Switch and 802.11g wireless access.

<edit> Marx Computers have an E-Tech Wireless ADSL Modem/Router/Switch for €119.00 incl. VAT at the moment).

    Thanks for the info guys.

I think I'd be better off buying the whole lot from UTV by the sounds of it, its not a bad deal. I think the Zytels are pretty good. With connection it's €149 and I own the ethernet router.

Just so you know, the reason you have to get an Ethernet modem is because their standard USB jobbie is completely incompatible with Mac OS 10.3.

I know, it seems a bit odd. It will work with 10.2 apparently, but not with 10.3 - a bit strange. But then, as a mac user you get used to half hearted support from isps in Ireland. But then again, we all have to contend with bad service from them, I suppose.

I'm with digiweb - they supply a Zytel ethernet modem as standard. It was very easy to set up on a PC (even with a Belkin wireless router) and I've found Digiweb very helpful - they always answer calls fast and you get to speak to the same person. I've heard that they're not great for gaming though this isn't a major issue for me. Pings :
