i'm too lazy to type a whole new answer but i cover your main issues here

for your individual questions and recommendations, you can get a radeon 9800 pro lite version (i.e. no software) on komplett for 205 euro i'd recommend this over the 9600XT definetly worth the extra bit.

the 64-bit system is the way forward yes it has less ram but much easier to upgrade this later when ya need it then a major upgrade that would be needed if you went down the other route.

if ya can go for a better processor also 3000+ or the 3200+ check out www.jes-computer.de

more memory is not necessarily good on a graphics card if the memory is run at lower frequency, e.g 256mb radeon 9200 gets trashed by a 9600 with 128mb memory.

I'd suggest you spend a little extra and get a decent cooler rather then a Spire whisperock socket A jobbie.

I have one on a 2800+ and it doesnt do a great job of cooling it.

I've got a 2500+ which is running at 3200+ speeds (2200mhz) with a Aero 7+ and its actualy cooler.

    CPU Heatsink : Kühler SA/478/754 ZALMAN CNPS-7000A-AlCu € 28,95 (better cooler and v.quiet)
    Graphics Card : 128MB Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro Lite-RTL € 209,90 (much faster than the 9600xt)
Hard Drive : HDD SATA 120GB Samsung SP1213C 8MB € 88,00 (add another at a later date and you can have Raid 0 - if you like)
Motherboard : MB ATX S754 Asus K8V SE Deluxe € 116,90 (decent solid board)
Memory : DDR PC433 512MB Mushkin CL2 Level One € 162,99 (bit faster for overclocking, fast timings - great ram)
    Processor : CPU AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Tray € 188,17 (faster than the 2800+ , nice chip)

    Sub-Total: € 794,91 (www.jes-computer.de)

You mite have to wait a bit longer for delivery, and the payment option are a little more awkward (bank draft) but you get a far far better machine for your money. Delivery is pretty cheap also.

You might need a new PSU , so watch out for that btw as its a power hungry PC. By the way the AMD64 3000+ totally kills the XP3200+ in almost everything.........XP's arent in the same league as AMD64.

For an extra €10 you can get the 160GB Samsung SP1614C 8MB from JES instead. One of the quietest and most reliable SATA drives out there at the mo. I've got 2 :D

I just builts a AMD 64 system, last night actually, I got a MSI FISR-2 motherboard. It is a fabulous piece of kit, support SATA, Raid0 and 1, onboard gigabit ethernet, decent on board sound card too. I'd highly recommend it. It's precursor recently reviewed on tomshardware came first in a round up of 64bit motherboards.

Get a K8T800 Pro or nF2250 board if you can, afaik the Abit KV8 Pro is cheaper than the older Max3 board you selected and should be better.

Socket 754 will be around for a year (from now, not from intro) by the looks of it, but will slowly drop from "upper mainstream" into low end. Mind you, thats more based on market positioning that real world performance.

Yea i noticed the Kv8 pro alrite, it only has 2 memory slots which put me off recomending it.
The KT800pro's are supposed to have AGP/PCI locks, ive seen one reviewed and it didnt work but mabye a bios update may sort it out.

I'd like to do a bit of messing around with the overclocking so which motherboard would be easier to do overclocking in. I read that abit was quite easy to overclock or am i mistaken and how do i know how powerfull my psu has to be? By the way this is my first pc and i am a compleat noob.

    Thx a mill.

Abit KV8 pro should be good for overclocking. Abit are one of the best for overclocking facitities, definetly the best IMO.

For overclocking the KT800pro OR the soon to be available NF250 are the best "chipsets" which come in different brands. Almost all boards will allow overclocking.

A decent name PSU , 380w+ to be safe. 350w would prob do providing its a decent make. ................... look here for a little more info and basic tips -> http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152842

The Abit KT800pro doesnt have a PCI/AGP lock yet while the nforce3 250 comes with a PCI/AGP. I'd definitely recommend the nforce3 250 as you wouldnt have to wait until they sort the lock out.
Check out AnandTech's reviews of the motherboards.

I have ordered a Diabolic Midi Tower Red 400 W PSU - Evil Case from komplett ( http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=124666&cks=PRL ). Is casedge a good brand, i know its abit late to be askin now but i was swong over by its looks. I think that should be allright then.

Thx alot for your help i'll keep you informed

neokenzo you seen the reviews of the new nforce 250 motherboards over at anandtech. Looks like the best overclocking board is the chaintech vnf3 250....but also the MSI and Epox boards getting excellent reviews the Epox has Gigabit Lan. I will probably go for Chaintech but I would prefer to hold on till they release the GB version.

Dutchboy good call on AMD 64 its the way to go.

I want to wait and see what Asus are going to bring out. I think Epox and MSI are good for sure. The Chaintech is good too but apparently it still have some minor problems that they are trying to sort out. Mainly the temp diode I think. AFAIK, the GB is only for Socket 939 and Athlon FX. I've not heard the GB for Socket 754.

[Edit]Oh yeah, the Chaintech doesnt have a multipliers I think, but still a good mobo nontheless[/Edit]

From my own and others experience, it appears impossible to use 3 Dimms on current A64 boards/CPUs anyhow. Installing the 3rd Dimm results in the inability to boot or massive instability if it does. Thats why several boards (even the older chipsets) now ship with only 2 Dimms.

Wow didnt know that. Heard something about if your using 3 dimms its only supposted at DDR333. So basically for the average user 1gb Ram is going to be the limit, unless they get 1gb sticks..........

What do you think about the higher Bandwidth V low Timings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

i think the new 939 platform can handle four dimms no bother
