Job Change

I've been working in Admin for the past two years and have recently left my old job as was bored to tears and basically treated like crap.

Have a degree in science and a post grad diploma in business studies, but only real experience up until now has been admin.

Am looking at different options which might have a brighter future.

    Basically looking in 2 areas

    - Banking
    - Retail Management

Big problem is that I'm not sure exactly what I want to do!

Anyone have any experiance or advice in either of the above two areas coming from a similar background?

Good experiences, bad experiences, alternative suggestions?

    Thanks

    Civil service grad scheme?

    Sales?

    Guards/Army?

without knowing what kind of person you are its very hard to suggest things.

Why not start somewhere like Dunnes for retail management.. probably not the best
place to work but they are a step in the right direction and always looking for
trainee managers.. in fact they are recruiting now if I recall correctly.. no matter what
the job is.. its a step in the right direction and giving you experience with a well
    know name..

As for banking, then the it depends on what area you want to get into..
are you interested in commercial banking side of things or the corporate side such
    as fund management etc..

I think you need to sit down and decide what area and be a bit more specific about
it, do some research and check the job sites to see if there are any opportunities
for graduates/trainees in the areas you are interested in..

Another thing to do is to work out your finances as you are essentially starting from
scratch so it wll mean a big wage drop.. clear as many debts as you can before you
start looking as struggling to live will not help you if your trying to learn a new job..

I changed a few years back from being a trainee accountant to IT.. i had to sit down
and decide what area of IT I wanted to get into and how to do it.. started with
college and then a fás course... then ****ty jobs to get experience on crap money..
its took me sometime but it was worth it..

    Tox

well, I have just run screaming from the public sector so that is a no no. What kind of person I am? Stress-bunny, overly sensitive, lacking in confidence..................my last job took care of eliminating the last shred of confidence I had. I would also say that I am more a people person. I reckon because I don't deal well with stress that a 9-5 type job might be better for me but on the other hand retail might just be what I need.

Does anyone know anyone in retail management? If so how do they find the long hours and weekend work?

I was a retail store manager for nine months and I hated it.

I was in Canada at the time and stores are open a lot longer there than here. I had to work a 12-hour shift once a week (9-9), every Friday night, every Saturday and every other Sunday. So basically, I had no life on the weekends. When I was first getting started, I had to clean house at the store I was placed in and worked easily 60-70 hours a week.

You will never get any days off at Christmas or other holidays because they're busy retail times. I remember basically promising two months worth of Sundays in exchange for getting one weekend off in August (back-to-school busy retail time) for a cousin's wedding.

I also hated having to deal with all the customer complaints.

What I did like was merchandising (arranging the store) and dealing with the staff. It was a sportswear store so most of my staff were high school/college kids working evenings & weekends. They were great kids.

yeah, I partly guessed that your weekend would be no more. I'd say I could handle that for a few months but after that I don't think so!

    Thanks!
