i have a biostar M7VIT Pro, and today any time i try to turn on the computer, it straight away starts going BEE-BAW-BEE-BAW-BEE-BAW. the CPU fan spins for half second, then stops. Yesterday while i was out it apparently went into this state from normal running, so it doesn't only happen when i try to turn it on.

It happened about three days ago, when i was restarting, and not since then. But now it just won't start properly at all :(

I've tried removing everything (graphics card, ram, ide) except the case connectors, cpu and cpu fan connector, and the same thing happens. then i removed the cpu fan connector, and the noise still happens (but obviously the fan doesn't spin for half a second)

Any ideas how i can fix this?

sounds like CPU overheating. Reapply thermal paste if you can, then try turning it on again. Also try resetting hte bios.

Reseat the graphics card or try a different one.

i don't think it's CPU overheating. the beeping is happening from the very moment i press the power switch, AND the fan is actually turning at that point. it takes a couple of seconds for an athlon to kill itself with overheating, so that beeping can't be a signal for overheating.

And i know how incredibly strongly the heatsink is pressed onto the CPU.. my fingers still remember the pain of attaching it ;) so i can't see why it would be an issue with poor contact :/

besides, i ain't got not thermal paste.
i've already tried resetting the bios, btw :)

and as for the graphics card... well... i don't imagine that will help, since the same symptoms occur with and without the current graphics card. but i will try my old card this evening

I've got some Artic Silver Compound if you need it. I bought it for €10 a few months ago but didn't need it in the end so it's unopened. I'll sell it to ya for a tenner. I'm based in Dublin if that suits. Your problem could be something to do with the motherboard. Is it touching the case? You might try reseating it making sure the stand-offs are correctly in place. Also, if you have a modem, take it out and try that.

    It's not overheating.

Make a note of the beep sequence e.g. one long, two short, one long etc.....
Then go over to the MB manufacturer's website where you should be able to find the beep codes (although they can be hard to find)

It could mean anything, power, memory error, MB fault, CPU fault. Try re-seating the PCI cards, GFX card and memory and if it's still going, re-seat the CPU.

if the yoke is going BEE-BAW-BEE-BAW-BEE-BAW, thats generally the sign for CPU overheating.

This exact thing happened to my new computer, i'd turn it on and nothig would happen, and i spent hours troubleshooting it until i remembered it came with a dignostic speaker thingy, and when i plugged it in, it went BEE-BAW like yours.

I checked it up and it was CPU overheating warning. SO i whipped out the fan connections, reapplied my thermal paste stuff, dropped the fan back on and it worked.

There is no way the CPU had even gotten over 30C, but for some strange reason, it thought the CPU was overheating.

Anyway, try nad clear the bios aswell, that might help.

Well, Biostar tech support say that's the sign of an overheating CPU. Looks like i'm in exactly the same situation as you were, Mutant.

The CPU definitely isn't overheating, but i reckon it might be a dodgy thermal diode or something. I'll see if reseating the CPU and heatsink (ouch) will help, and wiggle with all the bits i can :D

(i've tried resetting the bios, and removing everything but the CPU so far)
