Opening AVI folders makes pc hangs

Well basically I have about 30G of avi's in one of my folders. I would say that 80% of the time I tried opening the folder, it hangs and the folder closses. Then I opened it again and everything is fine. Does anyone know why? Is this the avi XP bug? Cant remember whether I get it fix although I have no problems deleting any of the avi's I have so far.

I *think* it because XP reads the avi's to get the resolution and length, and it displays that in the details. You'll notice sometime when you get access denied deleting files. Just move some into a different folder. In saying that i'm assuming their big MOFO's?

Well most them are about 700MB or so. But I also have another avi folder with smaller size like 30-40MB each and same thing still happens. I wouldnt want to have to put each of those avi on a separate folders. Going to be messy.

Well, if it is windows doing it scanning then you may have some luck. I'd say there is some way to disable it doing that. Are you using details view? Actually just testing it now, and i think its something to do with WiMP 9. I just opened a 17GB folder of avi's quick enough there, and its WiMP 8 on this box at the mo... and it doesn't have that resolution crap. Try right clicking on the labels bar at the top and deselecting certain attributes ? If any of that applies to you.

Edit: i just opened on my box with WiMP 9 on it, and it does its scanning after its opened....
    Try a defrag. I'd recommend O&O defrag.

Actually I have it as Thumbnail view. I also always defrag my hdd every few days or so but I used windows defrag rather than any other specialised software.

What do you mean by the "resolution crap"? I'll try and disable the attributes and see whether it makes any difference.

sure you got the right codecs?
Mine hangs when i try to open a mpg sometmes cos the codec isnt working or not found (or is corrupt) so that it thinks it has it but doesnt (if ya know what i mean).

Try opening witha different player or re-installing codecs.

Its the thumbnail view. Its trying to make a preview of each movie. For certain codecs this involves a lot of seeking on the file. Turn off thumbnail view (which is hideous and a pointless waste of space and resources IMHO)

I dont think its the codec because it doesnt hang when I try to open the file. They just hang when I open the folder.
I'm trying tiles view at the moment to see whether it makes any difference.

Occasionally you won't be able to delete or even move an AVI file, because as soon as you click on the file, Explorer hangs while trying to offer a preview of it. This usually happens when the AVI file is incomplete or corrupt. A quick Registry fix will unlock your AVIs so you can move or delete them.

Startup regedit......(click on Start | Run | "Regedit") Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\System FileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler and delete the Default key contained in this folder.

Backup your registry or make a restore point beforehand incase you balls it up ;)

Happens to me as well. I presume your using XP? Don't recall it ever happening in `98/2000. Have you found you cannot delete/move an avi (occasionally - not always). Found a possible fix below:

tools > folder options > view > do not cache thumbnails.

ive had this occasionally when opening folder with lots of movies in. if you leave it once and let it read all the files it should be fine from then on. otherwise untick the option above,

Thats what I have done. Its happening less now but still happening. I just open the folder and do nothing but it still hangs sometimes as well. I'll try the option you've mention and see how it goes.

[Edit]I've always had that option untick actually[/Edit]

sorry i meant tick not untick.

that means winxp wont try to grab all the file info for all the files when it loads the folder.

    Ah okay :)
    I'll give it a try.
