touchpad/shift key problem

Just trying to fix a flatmates problem with her laptop. She's running xp and is having problems with the shift keys not doing what they're supposed to. Sounded suspiciously like sticky keys to me, she can't get symbols and capital letters and the like.
But as well as all that, the touchpad doesn't work unless the shift key is also held down. Tried two different mice with it, usb didn't work and the PS/2 one did. Have restarted and it makes no difference.
I checked the keyboard settings and the accessibility settings but nothing strange there.

    Any ideas?

Do you have the drivers for the touch pad installed?

Yes they're installed. It seems to have sorted itself out since anyway, we left it on standby over night and in the morning everything was back to normal...
