Got this today in an e-mail.

Worth a look, though it was probably written by the chairman of Shell!

    > just now I received the following e-mail . Note prices are in Sterling,
    > but it doesn't take a genius to work it back to euro!
    >
    > We are going to hit over £0.89p a litre by the summer. Want petrol
    prices
    > to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
    > Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than
    > the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
    > campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just
    > laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves
    > by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it
    > was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up
    > with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in!
    > Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
    > think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at £0.79-£0.87, we need to take
    > aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not
    > sellers. With
    > the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take
    > action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is
    > if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we
    can
    > do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:
    > For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest
    > oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and Statoil. If they are not
    > selling
    > any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce
    > their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have
    an
    > impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and Statoil petrol
    > buyers.
    > It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this
    point...keep
    > reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
    > I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at
    > least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at
    > least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message
    > reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE
    > MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to
    > ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it
    > goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION
    > PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's
    > all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us
    > sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all
    > 300
    > MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!
    > I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
    > Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you,
    > please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR
    > PRICES
    > TO THE 69p a LITRERANGE
    >
    > Action:
    > It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
    > petrol
    > at anywhere but Statoil and Esso.

    Spam tbh

Spam if I'd sent it on. That's why I posted here to avoid spaming. Some people may be interested now that we've hit the €1 for a litre of petrol. Topical I'd say.

Tesco are opening a petrol station in Arklow where they are rumoured to be selling petrol at about 79 - 84 cents a litre - that'll be a big blow to the Esso/Statoil stations in Arklow!

This is spam, but rises the issue of the high cost of petrol.

Petrol companies are not the worst...it's the taxman..I think he takes 57cent on every litre(I'm open to be corrected on this).

But even though I don't like paying for the cost of petrol, I think it should stay expensive to provide a chance for other means of transport to compete (electric/hybrid cars etc..)

But the best is to walk/cycle as much as possible.
I cycle to work everyday (6 miles return)

Sorry for the rant, saw that movie last night "The day after tomorrow"

TESCO was €0.949 per litre last week

Never mind your spammy petitions, go where the petrol is cheaper, not like most motorists who just whinge and fork over at the higher rate.

it is not worth the effort telling people this as they still opt for convienence over the fact that they could save a euro or two per tankful.
Irish people are stupid when it comes to personal finances. Look at insurance for example - most people still do not ring around despite being told to by everyone including the insurance companies. It is the same when doing the family shopping. Many think thay are so wealthy that they don't shop around and are quite happy being bent over a barrell

oh how I wish we had a tesco station down here... cheapest I've found in the last few days is 97.9c.

Tesco is my nearest filling station here in England. The current price is 81.9p Sterling per liter for unleaded (83.9 diesel).

The largest share of the blame for the high prices has to go to the pack of vultures in government. In this case, our bunch in Westminster are greedier than the ones in Dublin.

I used to work for BP and I've seen the figures before. A petrol station makes more of a profit on selling papers, mars bars, and car washes than it does on petrol. The government gets the biggest chunk - nearly 75% from what I remember. 15-20% goes to the oil company, and what's left over goes to the petrol station owner and paying for having the fuel delivered. I'd say the percentages are probably about the same in Ireland...

Seems like a good idea but passing it through email to others (and the length of it) peeps will just delete it.

Everywhere around Cork city unleaded seem to have topped off at 99cents but when one goes up to €1 or over theres going to be differences between filling stations again.

Anyone knows exactly when they're going up, according to the news it should be soon? (need to fill up the tank this time, kept missing the last few times
    )

Anybody see the gouging bastards in London on ITV News yesterday evening? One petrol station jacked a litre of unleaded (not super unleaded!) up to 112.9p. That's about €1.70...   Talk about a deserving case for a firebombing.
