Yep, it has finally been done, and its playable (apparently) at 100% speed on a 2ghz processor.

Download Chankast v0.1 (Alpha) here: http://www.chanka.org/

Not for me ,stupid thing wont use my games pov hat as up down etc so i fire in Ikaruga but cant move.

Btw great emu works wel ,stu had issues with SF3 and some minor flaws in other games but pics he posted in IRC looked good.

You need a dreamcast bios to run it.

Er, can you run official dreamcast cd's using this emu? or do you have to aquire ISO's from somewhere?
Might be nice to dig out Crazy Taxi again ;)

Cant run GD roms but if you copy your disc into an ISO or pirated disc it will run.

I dont think you'll get near 100% speed on a 2ghz pc, on my xp3000 I get about 30fps in jet set radio, other games do a bit better.. eg sonic2 about avg of 45fps.

Its amazing how fast they have it running tho, hopefully the'll be able to squeeze some more performance out of it so it'll eventually achieve 100% on 3ghz+ PCs.

    Hmmm, so it's do-able then?
I thought there was some incompatibility where the disk spins in the opposite direction to normal CD-ROMs, can you rip them and read them in reverse or something?
Or am I way off ;)

Would be really interesting if they could get the internet feature emulated so you could play the likes of Phantasy Star online.... online... using your PCs broadband connection instead of crappy dialup.
Or has their whole online service been scrapped already?

Actually, at this rate I might aswell just dig around in the bottom of my wardrobe and resurect the ol' thing ;)

The whole spinning backwards of GD-roms is just a rumour/myth.
They are said to spin the normal way. There is said to be one drive out there that can read them, a special yamaha one. Either that or get one of the dev kits but that's around two grand on ebay.

As for copying the dc games. A quick google should pull up some nice tutorials.

Just been playing Powerstone and from what I can see the emulation is perfect and fast. I've also just read the next version of chanka will support Shenmue:)

Oh dear God I didn't think it'd be so complicated!
Transfering ~1Gig over a serial cable, lol really.
Doesn't seem worth all the hassle tbh.

There are loads of DC ISO's floating around already. Even more so now because of chankast actually lets you play them:)

Ah even still you're left downloading (!)huge(?) megs per game :/
Not as tidy as the old playstation EMUs where you could just slap an official CD in and away you go.
Even still, fair play to them for preserving yet more gaming history ;)
Just have to think of a DC game I want to play again so badly I'd spend six hours downloading it.

There's a good few. Just start the download then sleep and it's finished in the morning.

Naaah 512k, hence my estimate of 6 hours.
My point is though, I've got a working DC downstairs under a pile of clothes... so effort vs novely.

I haven't had much of a chance to check out the emu, but am I right in saying that sound isn't emulated yet ?

I gave a loan of my DC and N64 to someone and never got them back Santos. I haven't bought a new DC yet, but it'll have to be done.

sadly its impossible (as far as i know) to get console online games and play em online on your pc cos the server that exact console uses cant be copied coz its built into the console (or network adapter) but ppl keep coming up with 3rd party servers so they might work on a pc its like that gamecube thing that lets you play gc lan games online

Isn't it cheaper to pick one up second hand than to download an emu these days?? :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 101 ✭✭huge

ya your right i never download emu's and rom's (not only bcoz its illegial) unless i cant find the game i want and playing it on the console is more fun than on the pc

Finally shenmue on my pc, yey!!! Hehe. Only problem i'm having is the sound, it's awful most of the time, not nearly emulated as properly as it should be, still chankast is only in the 0.2a stage so ya can't expect much. Im in town right now and trying to work out where talboy street is, might go in and have a look. At first the graphics and general speed of the game was kinda slow, and still is, it's playing at like 2/3 speed. I'd recommend underclocking the cpu to 50 by keeping your finger on the minus key. Makes the games run a little smoother.

There is ashop off grafton street (left hand side about half way up opposite flower seller people.

They have DC games in stock atm.

Yeah thanks man, found it already tho. Found some other shop near it too that actually has one dreamcast left for sale, didn't enquire about the price tho. That may be of interest to you Placebo

Anybody got a good link to a faq for iso creation on this, I've had a look but it looks muchos complicated and my brain just cant handle it.

Think it'd prob be easier just to get a new dreamcast from lik-sang at this stage, mine's having "issues" with the old watercooling.
