i have bittornado and i used to get speeds of 50 k downloading but recently this has gone all together!
im DLing now and my upload speeds get up to 12k but down speeds only reach about 7or8 with an average most of the time at 3kb/sec!
any1 know what the story is?
i have a dlink 604+ and have port redirection set to start port 6881 end port 6889 and my local ip address set to that i received using ipconfig a few wks ago. (192.168.0.8)
    any help please?
    cheers

Firstly change the default ports that bittornado uses to something else, like ports 22-30. or 2525-2534. Anything random like that.

Then set your router to allow those ports. That might help.

yes, i think i have that
i have bittornado using a default port rabge of 6881-6889
and in the port redirection section of the router's page i have start port 6881 end port 6889.
but still my uploads are faster than my downloads.
i even tried using netlimiter to slow the uploads but that just slowed the downloads to 1k or so

Do you have to give the port redirection thingy an ip of a computer on the network? If so, what happens if you use DCHP? Any way of getting around having to change the ip so often?

Also make sure you don't saturate your upstream. Because if you do, it'll easily affect your download speeds.

Did you even read what i said?

CHANGE the ports from the default range of 6881-6889 to something else!

sorry if i sound narky, but i think you missed the whole point of my post completely

PLEASE do not use port numbers less than 1024. These are formally referred to as Well Known Ports, and are assigned to specific protocols and/or applications by the IANA.

Try ports 6881 to 6999. Bittornado uses those ports.

Right, i think i should explain WHY i said use ports 21-30.

The reason is that some ISP's (including Irich Broadband) limit traffic on certain ports, including the STANDARD ports used by many P2P applications.
Try ports 6881 to 6999. Bittornado uses those ports.

Yeah, i was making him deliberately use NON-standard ports, to avoid ISP traffic limiting. There is a reason behind my madness :p

That is also the reason why i said port 21-30. Port 21 is the FTP port, and so is very unlikely to be traffic limited. Therefore if his torrents were set to use that port, then it would be obvious if it was an ISP problem, or just something else.

HacksawEddie: How slow are the torrents? Have you tried using the low port numbers? Have you tried different torrents from different sites. Have you tried different clients? Such as burst which is my personal favourite. Its not as fancy, but i find its the only one that works reliably for me. I have it set to use ports 21-30, and i get full speeds providing there are enough seeds/peers.

i tried setting the ports to 22-30 but its still really slow!
    i have a torrent DLing @ 8k and uploading @ 3k
yes, tried a few diff files from a few diff sources but no luck.
i will give it a shot with another client when i get a chance tomoro morning and let u know if it is improved.

    cheers

Sorry I should have explained: I said to 6999 HacksawEddie only has up to 6889 open, that's 110 odd ports he has closed which should be open - try and open them all. Recently extra ports were added to the newer BT clients.

i know, but using non-standard ports is infinately better (providing you remember to open them in your router).

When i use standard ports i can only connect and download at a mere 5kb/sec (ish).

When i use any non-standard port, i max out my connection within minutes usually.

    things are looking up now!
i did a factory reset on the router (then had a terrifying 5 minutes trying to find my password!!)
i then set torrent and router to ports 20-500 and im now getting top speeds of 50-52 again..brilliant!

    thanks for all the help.

Glad to see you got it sorted. The old port changing trick helps 9 times out of 10.

That's odd. I had exactly the opposite experience to you. I originally configured my client to use non-stanrdard ports, opening up said ports on my router but found I'd never get anything over 10k/sec even if I was lucky. I switched over to the standard ports, and opened them up on my router, rebooted the router and hey presto, more often than not get the maxed out speeds of 50-54k/sec on my 512 Eircom connection.
