Ferries try to sink low-fare adverts
    From:The Irish Independent
    Thursday, 27th May, 2004

BRITISH ferry operators have sailed headlong into a fares row with budget airline Ryanair.

They want to stop the Irish airline advertising "free" flights promotions.

They have complained to Britain's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about a newspaper promotion by Ryanair, which they say was misleading.

The Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), which represents nine of the UK's ferry operators, complained that as the deal did not include taxes it could not be described as a "giveaway".

If upheld, firms would be prevented from advertising "free" deals where customers are faced with compulsory charges, such as taxes.

Other types of "giveaway" promotions would also be included in the changes designed to protect consumers from hidden costs.

But Ryanair hit back last night, accusing the ferry operators of being unable to compete in the hotly contested marketplace.

"Ryanair sold hundreds of thousands of flights with this offer and we did not receive one single complaint," an airline spokeswoman said. The only one to complaint was the PSA who obviously could not compete, she said.

The council of the ASA is due to consider the complaint and announce its decision next month.

MAybe the ferry companies should take a leaf out of ryan airs book? I cant see any reason why a ferry company couldnt go the cheap fares route, if they were suffiecently motivated enough. The sad fact is that their are one of the most hidebound industries out there. Its very sad when a ferry trip costs more than a flight these days.
