Not sure if I should add to the speculation but I was talking to NTL earlier about moving my NTL TV account. I asked about BB and while it is not available at the moment in the area (Dublin 8) the person I was talking to did suggest that I should get more information on NTL BB sometime during the summer. She mentioned that it had been planned to happen earlier in the year but upgrading of the network failed and it was taking longer to launch due to this(I didn't follow up on this comment as I was in a hurry).

Take the above as you will. She seemed to have some clue about what she was talking about (I think) and didn't say it would definitely happen just that she would not say it was "official". When it happens it happens.

Anyone else hear something similar or is it just the usual pie in the sky from NTL?

I got the same sort of feedback when I rang up NTL about getting broadband in. I reckoned though that if they were saying "hopefully in the summer" that it'd be at least another 12 months!!! So I signed up with UTV instead!

They are doing a batch of 1000's of premises which will be released for sale in the summer. It may well be in D8 , dunno. Has anyone seen any digging on the pavement around there ?

Last summer they launched 5000 in one whack in Lucan.

Its still the best deal in Ireland overall and the lowest pings in its class (sub €50).

Just as a matter of interest do NTL break the connection every so often the way other ISP's do or is it 'always on'?

the connection is always on as far as I can tell. Its same as being on a network (Like at work) rather than connected by dial up modem. There is no dial up icon at all- it is simply always connected. I have it over a year now with only very minor interruptions. Usually d/l stuff consistently at 65-75KBps. and a huge cap which I have never even come near breaching. Actually I will never switch BB provider unless other ISP's raise the cap.

that's just a setting in windows, you can have the connection icon with any type of network connection whether it be dialup or a LAN type connection through a network card. if you do want an icon (just so you know when something is happening) you can right click on the network connection in Network & Dialup Connections in Control Panel and choose properties. there's a tick box on the bottom left which says 'Show Icon In Notification Area When Connected' which will ut the little icon by the clock. it can be handy to have it there sometimes.

vibe-yer right, that icon is handy for seeing the action on the line. I used to look at the modem D/S and U/S lights but this is far easier!
