My pc just gave up there a few days ago and when try to reboot it it tells me that there a system file missing .

When i try another hdd with xp on it i get a BSOD when i reboot telling me i prolly have a virus or should reinstall my hhd drivers!!

But i never had to install drivers for a hdd before - xp just did it automatically.

this is weird because i put the first hdd in aonther pc and it works perfectly - its actally the one im using now!!

    any help???

Hmm, could be a number of things.

First things first, change IDE cables with known good ones.
It could be the RAM, try with only one stick in (if you have more than one). If you only have one stick, try get a spare to test it with.
It may be the motherboard .... erm, buy it flowers on mother's day? Other than that you've no choice but to replace it :p

Honestly, there's a huge list of possibilities ... but most likely it's a motherboard/ram problem.

thanks - some good advice there but ive tried all those things and

1 - not the mobo because my pc boots past post and will even give me the option of starting in safe mode but then goes pearshaped
2 - not the ide cables because it is reading off the drives
3 - not the ram because i tried it in another pc

im sure i'll get it going once i get a bit of time - very busy wit exams now.
I may even use this oppurtunity to upgrade.
    I'll keep trying...

Well the fact that it (the hard drive) _does_ work in another pc would suggest that it's your hardware at fault.

Try reseating your RAM anyway, as well as your IDE cables. (take them out completely ... and then put them back in after a good puff of dust-moving air :))

*edit* yeah I'm waiting on a hardware error so I've an excuse to upgrade too :)
    Now, where'd I put that hammer?? :p
