Heards something on Euronews this morning. Can't really remember the details as i was half asleep, but there seem to be some sort new DVD out that can only be viewed 8 times and then thrown away and recycled. This new DVD will be alot cheaper and will somehow eliminate piracy. Any one see this article or know anything about this??

yeah, that's basically it. if i remember rihgtly they had planned on using them in situations where the content was being rented.

the disc has a layer in it that when exposed to air (they would come vacuum packed) would slowly being to become opaque kinda like reactions sunglasses which would make them unreadable.

wasn't aware that anyone found a real practical use for them though, that would actually work.

The idea is that you 'Rent' your movies in the garage or shop on the way home.
You never have to return it,.

Yea i think it will prob suit everyone, prob is the cost ........ will it be increased? Considering you have a longer time to view the film and the fact that the video store will have to stock them and you can imagine how many - and the initial cost of getting them in along with what if the DVD isint popular ........... i can only see this as being a second option at best for the near future - and at an increased price.

[edit] and i would imagine it would be a matter of time as apposed to how many times you watch it before it becomes useless .

i dont see what affect it will have on piracy
just rip it before the disc become useless

I dont think it would suit everyone though. Personally, I would like to keep the DVD's I buy. No point paying money for something and then its useless.

Yea exactly it will have zero effect on Piracy, actually it might increase it as you will have more time to do it.

Well i think it was geared more for the rental business than for general sales.
Still the usage would depends on wheater you rap it in cling film after usage etc........ i thought the idea would be great at first but thinkin more about it, mabye not so much.

Personally i can't see the advantages except that people can be lazier than usual, and don't have to return a rented film.

And the biggest dissadvantage i can see is the pollution. Just imagine America's thriving rental business switching over to disposable discs in 2-3 years time. Just imagine the huge stack of useless discs created in just one month. I can't imagine this being eco friendly.

afaik it doesnt matter what you do with it, once its exposed to air, its gonna be useless in x days/hours.

as for the environmental issue, the idea is that wherever you can "rent" them ie the garage shop etc there will be a bin where you deposit them after use. thats the theory, but i dont think theyve factored in peoples lazyness.

hey maybe we can get a new color wheelie bin just for these! that'd be a great excuse for the govt to spend money on something we dont need(political rant over.)

So basically you still have to return to point of purchase to "drop them off". I tihnk that just ruled out the main advantage of not having to return them. But i suppose people can still be lazy and wait til they have a stack of 50 dead discs before they bring em down...

thats the idea. allow them to build up for ages and eventually bring em back. it would work better if you got a euro back for each one to returned/recycled.

AFAIR I read about this in the States. There are Kiosk's, on the street, that you rent them from. You drop in your $4 (or whatever) into the vending machine and take your DVD.

Still, i can easily imagine most people being too lazy to return them to a proper recycle bin, and most of em will end up in a standard bin.

    Its madness, thats my opinion.

    true!

what's the point of this dvds if I have to take them to special recycling place! it's just the same as returning the DVD back to the renting place, you still have to get your lazy ass up!

    ---

and there is NO WAY i will pay 25 for a DVD I can only view 8 times! I think it will kill DVD sales! no one will want to buy that!

What's the chances that somebody will invent a spray or something to stop the disc from degrading?
