Harddrive fuxored.

Partition magic had an accident at 95%, and decided to stop rejigging my 160gb harddrive. I was origionally merging a 15 gb partition and a 145gb partition.

Anyway, it ended up leaving me with my 15gb partition, my 145gb partition, and a new 145gb partition which consisted of just empty space.

Of course, then it decided to reboot my computer. When it finally booted back up, i found that the feckin thing is showing up as unformatted.

There is stuff on that drive that i CANNOT lose. Is there any way to recover? OR is it completely fuxored?

Easy recovery pro ,but you must trransfer it to another physical drive.

Or else its like trying to clean a dirty glass of water with the same glass :0

    Inbox emtied (slightly).

I tried a different recovery program, but it didnt/wouldn't recognise the harddrive as it wasn't formatted! Ack.

Easy Recovery will still work on it. I don't really know of any other program as good as it. Unfortunately they're downloadable demo won't help you much. Its limited in the number of files you can recover.

    <edit>
You could try using a Knoppix CD, but how well that works depends on the state of your partition table, and it could possibly make things worse.

Mutant - burn yourself a copy of SystemRescueCD, boot it up, and do

    run_qtparted

Let us know what you can see.

Depending on the results, you may also need gpart to guess your partition table. You can put this on a separate floppy and run it after booting with the Rescue CD.

These are both open-source fully functional tools - no file limitations, expiry dates, or other restrictions. Some Linux knowledge is helpful, but not essential, particularly for Boardsies - just post here if you have any questions.

i have no working flppy drive. In my wisdom i decided that i'd never need one again, and never replaced it when it broke.

I'll try the bootable CD now.

No problem - boot the Rescue CD with option "cdcache", and it will be loaded entirely into memory. Burn gpart onto another CD, and launch it from there.

guys i've got a drive that i've been asked to take a look at - windows recognises it but can't read the partition on it - will the linux disc help me or would easy recovery be a better option.

It was in a usb chassis but i can also plug it in as an ide drive is needs be
