Cheap PC build

I'm looking for any tips anyone might have on building a very cheap PC. It's for a family member who will probably never use it for anything more than web browsing and playing some light-weight games.

At the moment the system we have set up is a P3 500 mhz with 128MB ram and it's a dog, really crawls along. So, obviously I don't need an amazing setup but I am going as low spec as I can while giving an obvious performance increase over the current setup. Upgrading the current RAM and HDD will probably cost almost as much as the parts to build a semi-decent rig so I'm opting for the latter.

Ideally the new setup would be in some sort of small form factor case....Shuttle style is perfect but the cases alone cost 200-300 euros so that's out. I'm trying to get my hands on a horizontal case but they're not that common any more it appears. Does anyone know if the horizontal cases take the same ATX layout mobos as normal tower cases?

I'm reading through Komplett's site but they don't seem to have exactly what I'm after. Also, not really interested in 2nd hand cause I like having warranties etc.

Check the FS Forum. Some good ~PIII complete computers going for sale almost daily!

You say you're not that interested in second hand, but all the stuff I've ever bought off people on boards has worked perfectly!

In answer to your question about horizontal cases, they do take the same motherboards as ATX tower cases, as long as they too are ATX compliant. (i.e, some desktop-style cases such as those found on Dell Optiplex machines will NOT take a standard ATX motherboard.

Get a athlon 2400 mobile with some nforce2 mobo. They are really cheap and perfrom great. They also overclock to 3200 levels easily with the stock cooler and stock voltage. All you have to do is changethe fsb to 200 and the multiplier to 11.

    Ram get 512mb of pc3200.

Graphics card- see if you can pick up a geforceTi4800 somewhere. Old card but still a great performer and it should be really cheap.

Get a 7200rpm hard-drive with 8mb cache. Choose whatever size you want. Good brands are western digital, samsung and seagate.

That's the main bones of your system. I don't have an exact figure but i'd say you could pick all that up for about 300 euro.
