following on from my previous question regarding winrar i was wondering is there a similar way i can a bit torrent client without really installing anything, since i don't have admin access on the computer i use?

I've noticed that when i click on a bit torrent download i get a page of nonsense like so:

    d8:announce39:http://www.th estuff22.com:6969/
    announce13:creation

i'm wondering is this a problem with not having rar installed or the lack of a bit torrent client.

anyone using BT on linux out there?

Try using Azureus, it's a java BT client.

All that's happening is that you're seeing the contents of the torrent file.
Try clicking save as on that torrent link instead of just clicking it.
Then open the saved torrent file in Azureus.

    Shouldn't have any problems then.

You need a bit torrent client. Most of the clients out there require other perl/phython packages to be installed so without admin access you may not get it to work. But google for other alternatives.

One solution is to use azureus
Its java based so you should be able to download the linux jre from sun, extract that to your home directory and then run it. It's gui based so you will need an x-server on the machine.

ok i've downloaded and unpacked azureus. i have also downloaded the java JRE file and managed to get the unpacked to my home directory. i then followed all the instructions and made a link like so:
    * If Mozilla is installed in this directory:
    /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/
    * and if the JRE is installed at this directory:
    /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04
    * Then type at the terminal to go to the browser plug-in directory:
    cd /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins
    * Enter the following command to create a symbolic link to the Java Plug-in for the Mozilla browser.
    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32
    /libjavaplugin_oji.so .

...except i used the correct directories instead of the ones in the example obviously. so it all looks good. i went to mozilla and activated java in the preferences. i then went back to azureus typed:

    ./azureus

    and got this:

    Attempting to start Azureus...
./azureus: line 52: java: command not found

for some reason it can't seem to find the java part it needs

well i managed to get it working somehow, the program that is. i clciked on a torrent, saved the target file and opened it up in azureus. problem is now the file is just sitting there.

it says 0.0bs downloaded and a red light with no sign of it trying to connect. the torrent is a very healthy one. do i have to configure the program in some way? (i gave all the default settings in the setup).

Double check that the tracker for the torrent is active.
If you click on the torrent in My Torrents, it'll bring you to a new window with all the info for the torrent.
It'll tell you if the tracker is active and home many seeds and leechers there are.

Also, make sure your firewall is configured properly.

are you operating behind a restrictive firewall or NAT? You might be seen as you don't have root!

You'll get by with just port 6969, but it's best to have incoming ports open too.

it is possible you may have to sign up to the tracker before you can download.

i've checked the info section and the torrent looks ok. i don't think i have to sign up to it either. i have a feeling i'm behind a firewall now. dammit. is there anyway i can check this? i remember there was a link a while back to a site that did a quick check and told you what restrictions you had? anyone know anything about this?

can you explain this a bit more? do i set my incoming port to 6969 in the configuration?

If you're behind a firewall, it doesn't matter what you set on your own box - it's the firewall settings that are critical. You need to be able to make outbound connections on port 6969, at the very least, and preferably accept inbound connections on ports 6881-6889.

You've been fairly vague about your particular situation, but if you're working in a company with a competent IT department, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to do either of these things without assistance from your sysadmin. I wouldn't even attempt this where I am, because I know it wouldn't work. I have it set up at home, but that's because I have complete control over my own firewall.

I think your best bet is to cosy up to your IT guys, and see if they can help you out.

If that doesn't work, and you're feeling adventurous, google for "firewall piercing" and see where that takes you.

It's been a while since I've uses Azureus, but if I recall correctly, you'll need to edit the shell script (the 'azureus' file in the program's directory) that runs the program, and tell it where your java executable is (it's obviously not in your path seeing as it's in your home dir, hence the "./azureus: line 52: java: command not found"). Then you should be able to run it on its own with ./azureus (or set up a link on your desktop).
