    Okay heres my story.
I pulled a film off a guy on my network, naive enough to think that everyone had a virus free comp. All was gud until i saw an app that appeared from nowhere in the folder 'britneysux.exe' which was a tad embarassing b/c i was about to watch the film with my girlfriend :dunno:
Anyhow i deleeted that and a day later 2 other dubiously named apps appear. So i do an AV scan and a virus called Oror Q was found
Oror.Q, which is a dangerous worm that deletes files that belong to antivirus programs and also closes the active processes related to these programs. Although it usually spreads via e-mail, Oror.Q can also spread across the computers connected to a network. This worm activates when attached file is run, or when the message carry this worm is viewed through Outlook's Preview Pane. It does this by exploiting the Exploit/iFrame vulnerability in this mail program. In addition, if the chat application mIRC is installed in the infected computer, Oror.Q will open a communication port, leaving the computer exposed to external attacker.

I used Panda active scan to delete it...but after the reboot all hell broke loose. I can't open any programs whatsoever e.g. media player, IE, etc. Windows says it can't [find the file, tho the .exe is staring me straight in the face.
I tried a repair installation, no joy tho. I get the error message $winnt$.exe not found. I try to do stuff and i get all sorts of error messages telling me 'file not found', some win32 file not found or some file in windows folder not found.

I don't particularly want to format, i have 10gb of music, docs, etc that i need.
I did an online AV scan and theres no virus found anymore.
    Any ideas?

    Teccie stuff: Windows XPpro, SP1.
No AV at the time(yes i know, but you'd think being behind a firewalled router with just 2 other comps on the network normally would be safe enough....but noooo!)

You need a format / reinstall....... You said the errors are form missing files etc...

Take the hard drive out connect it to another comp as slave, copy you data over music etc...

Format & reinstall XP, then put the backed up data back on, Problem solved.

    Thanks JoePC

Yeah that what i was thinking. Pain in the arse to do, it takes so long i find to transfer files like that via ide cable. Why is that, why issit slower than transferring by cat5?

maybe the hard disk isn't getting set up to use UDMA? just be damn sure you have an AV program running on the other computer before you connect that infected drive to it :)
