    New tax regulations for taxis
    May 24, 2004 09:27

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan has announced a crackdown on taxi drivers who do not pay their taxes.

From next August, every taxi driver will have to supply a tax clearance certificate from the Revenue Commissioners if they want to have their licenses renewed.

The Minister said the measure, recommended to him by the National Taxi Council, was one of a number of initiatives being introduced to promote a more professional, reliable and safe taxi service in which the travelling public could have full confidence and, for those directly involved in providing the service, a proper level of income and standard of living.

Mr Brennan also said that in the first three years following the liberalising of the taxi industry, the number of taxis countrywide has grown substantially, increasing from 3,934 in November 2000 to 12,845 at the end of 2003.

In Dublin, the number of taxis in Dublin has risen from 2,722 to 9,320. There has also been dramatic increases in the number of taxis in Drogheda (51 to 152), Navan (50 to 141), Longford (14 to 44), Tralee (18 to 76) and Sligo (25 to 89).

The Transport Minister said he will shortly appoint a National Taxi Regulator to take charge of the industry countrywide and to implement improved standards. He said he wants to bring about a 'cab culture' in Ireland that will place taxis and hacknets as an integral part of the public transport system.
