A friend of mine has €2,500 to buy a laptop, hes doing a PhD in computer science so hes looking for a beast to do compiling and running databases and junk but purely a work beast the only game he'd play on this is Solitaire.

Hes asked my advice but I'm not much use when it comes to laptops, I've heard a few horror stories about Dell so I'm not to sure about them.

Can anyone recommend a good brand, model or shop?

If found an AMD 64 system on jes for €1,379

    http://www.jes-computer.de/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=150_123&products_id=16106

If thats how much an 64 system costs does anyone know where I could spend another grand on a boosted AMD 64 or FX based system?

I bought a Satellite 5100-503 in June 2001 for the hefty price of €3039. Since then the hard drive has died twice, the DVD/CD-RW has died, had to get a new keyboard, the sound went and the final straw is that the graphics card (nvidia geforce4) crapped out on me and I cant play games on the heap of crap anymore. It still works, just have to run in VGA.

When each of those happened it had to be sent back to BMS or Calyx in Dublin, so with each breakdown it was away for anything up to 3 weeks. Most of the above happened within the warranty period too (alot to happen to a laptop within 1 year). Sadly the warranty is up now so I cant get the graphics card fixed. Recently I was told that I could get it fixed, but it would probably cost me upwards of €1000. Balls to that! This may just be poor ol unlucky me, but the moral of the story (at least as far as I'm concerned) is to never buy Toshiba again.
