I have the NEC ND-2500A DVDRW drive and I use Verbatim 4x DVD-R's. Should I bother updating the firmware using Herrie's update. Will my 4x then burn at 8x? Verbatim discs are not listed in his update. He also has a new update which allows the drive to burn dual-layer discs although those discs can't be bought anywhere yet. If you want this firmware update, go to the last post in the linked thread above

Just because it CAN burn at 8x does not mean you SHOULD burn at 8x.

If i burn my "That's Write!" 4x DVD-R's at 8x they corrupt, but if they are burnt at 6x they are perfect.

It would be worth updating just to get past the 2X video rip speed.

Yeah, you can rip at faster speeds, which is always a bonus.

And i wholeheartedly recommend trying at least 1 disc of whatever your media is at 8x or 6x, and see if the results are perfect.

Some media can be easily burned at 8x, and others can be easily burned at 6x, even though they are rated at 4x.
