Ireland Based Trek Fan Movie

I am wondering if anybody is interested in working on a project with me. You don't have to be a trekkie yerself but it is a trekkie project. Me and a few guys from the Star Trek board are planning to shoot a trek fan movie based mainly in dublin, but in other parts of Éire too. Basically what i'd need is someone with a dv cam (have one already, but for multipal shots of same scene... etc) People who can handle the camera. Video editors (i'll be editing the movie myself but ya know, 2 or 3 people working together will get the job done faster) and that kinda thing. Mosey on over to the trek board and check out the various threads on the project. Also i'd need people who can offer (loan) equipment and be part of the project, ie boom mikes, green screens (if possible) that kinda thing. A white screen for projectors would work too, cus i can get my editing program to turn it green, then key out the green for whatever i need. All of your help, or whatever you can offer, would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you.

Thats going to cause you problems in the long run as anything in shot that is white apart from the screen will also be turned green and as a result become see through. Stick with blue or green and make sure those colors arent featured in any of the foreground action.

Hmmm I hope one of the locations is Templebar on a saturday night.
Spock and chums beam down to a strage new world and must engage in these strange new clubbing rituals in order to secure an alliance with this new race known as "female".

    tbh ;)

Actually one of the crew could get completely wasted and spend 6 hours staring at his phaser beam, but what he didn't realise is that he's killed about 50 people while doing it.

The potential for comedy here is like warp 10 or something.

I think the trekkies making this should stick to things they are familiar with ;)

    Noooo!
That's the whole fun of it, they could use method acting :D
It's a voyage of discovery after all.

/me smells a ban from the Star Trek forum

I suppose slagging like that was to be expected, don't worry different ideas for comical sides to the movie have been put in place, and yes temple bar in some way/shape/form will be in the movie, possibly not as extreme tho, just maybe one of the crew members who is too used to synthahol can't handle his drink... etc etc. Anyways aside from the comical replies, i'd like real replies from people who are interested in the editing, vfx, sfx or anything that could help out really. If other posts like that appear i'll just get the thread closed.

I have a panasonic ag-dvx-100ae. It's probably the king of 3ccd dv cams. The image quality is superb and I also have video editing experience. Panasonic ag-dvx-100a scouts around for about €4'000 so you pay for what you get.

    agdvx100.jpg

However, i live in waterford ;)

Anyways, if you want to check out any of my work, I have some very basic test footage on my site: http://www.fckvwls.com

I'll also be doing an actual scripted shoot this weekend, so if you want to wait until then for some actual worthwhile footage, then check back on the site then.

I had a chance to shoot some stuff on that camera, it's really sweet. Have you been shooting 24p? I unfortunately didn't get to shoot any properly lit setups with it, just behind the scenes stuff.

The actual PAL version shoots at 25p, 25p(advanced) and 50i. I've shot with all. As for the lighting, the low light shoots have been alright, but anything correctly lit is absolutely amazing. With the cine-like mode on 25p, you kinda get a film effect. It's gives a pretty amazing output for the price.

Wow that's very generous man. And dont worry the fact that your in waterford shouldn't be a prob, just when shooting actually takes place you'd have to be willing to travel up to dub or whatever. However this project aint really centralised in dub although that'll be the main location. As a proper script hasn't been drawn up yet, anything is possible. After the emergency beam out at the start of the movie, i was thinking of having 2 members of the crew being scattered in ireland, 1 in galway and 1 somewhere else (possibly waterford) and having to get back to dub, that kinda thing. It can all be worked around anyways. Keep in touch man via pm alright? Very much appreciated, and your editing work will be welcome also. Question tho, are you experienced with premier? (im guessing yes) and after effects? For general special effects for post renders of the cgi overlayed with footage from the cam. I have ideas about doing it but i've really only been working with premier since about febuary. Anyways cheers man, as tesco's say... every little helps :)

Np bud. As for post-prod with after affects I have actually gotten around to working with it yet. I will get to it soon. I pick up things quite quickly. As for premier goes, I'm pretty fluent with it.

If you need to contact me, just email me @ john@fckvwls.com.

I have a sennheiser phantom powered shotgun mic. Worth 700. It's all we will need. Very high quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

You might need an experienced boom swinger to attach to to the mic.

And make sure you have a good set of cans... I shot something a week or two ago and got back some terrible crackles that I didn't notice on the day.

    For extra money saving...

There's other sites out there for custom making everything from boom poles to jibs. Sure beats buying or renting and gives you something to do on a Sunday afternoon...

dlofnep I watched your video, looked ok. I would comment that if you have people walking across frame, Ie, entering and then exiting. That you cut a frame later and a frame earlier. You should never leave an empty screen, if you cut into a picture and have a tiny bit of a person's clothing showing and then when you cut out, cut out before the person leaves the frame completly. Trurt me, it'll make your edit alot smoother.

I like (maybe other editors do too) to call it cutting on the move, IE you cut away from the picture on movement.

All good sugestions guys but ya have to understand that currently, the budget for this project stands at about 50c. The only way i can see us raising money if we need to rent anything is by pooling together. But hopefully it's gonna be done with as little money spent as possible, be it kind people like dlofnep offering his services and that kinda thing. Err... video editing and camera services that is... for this project... just to clear something up with the more filthy minded of you out there :P

It was just rough footage with a very quick edit just to see what the footage would turn out like. I'm not too worried about it; Appreciate the comments all the same.

Well if you're not bothered about it, why are you uploading it, and posting here that we go and look at it?

    John

    (Never mind)

    *sigh*

I apologise for sharing. I stated that it was very basic test footage, and I aimed it towards Achilles so he could guage a feel of the cam. That is all. I'm fully aware of any flaws in my shoots although I appreciate your comments all the same. No need to get uppity buddy.

Dont worry man, boards tends to have the odd muppet here and there. I havn't had look at your footage yet because of my current net situation. Should be in a mate's later tho so i'll check it out then. Im sure tho for €4000 that the quality of the cam will be excellent anyways. And the mike ;-).By the way, you have a boom pole for it, right?

    YO!

The second link doesn't work for me, but comments on the first link.

If you are going to use the freeze fram method, watch your backgrounds.... Also instead of freezing the frame straight off, it might be an idea to slow the motion of the preceeding second and then freeze the frame, it migt lead to a smoother shot. Other then that I cant see anything wrong with it.

Yeah tbh, I was only pulling your leg aswell.
Think you were just being oversensitive, what would mister spock say?
Offers four V shaped finger sign... live long and prosper.

The transporter effects are a bit rough around the edges, and scenes with moving objects like the washing on the line should probably not be stopped.
Why don't you upload the raw footage somewhere so we can all have a go at the transporter effects, it'd be like the Pick'n'Mix boards famous 'Photoshop This' threads. (only non-pornographic)

Is there a board dedicated to this project yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,190 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    With the second one

I'm no video expert, but perhaps it might be better to have "touchable" objects integrated with background ones. So for example, instead of having a screen appear in mid-air, have a portion of the doorway appear, about where the side of a press is. So instead of attempting to line up the screen with where your finger is pointing, you only have to keep it flush against the straight edge of the press, for example.

As I say, zero experience with video editing. :)

Yeah there is a dedicated thread. It's over in the star trek forums. I didnt wanna say that here cus i got in trouble on another board for pointing people away from their board. Dunno why tho, the mod seemed a bit touchy. If i'm overstepping the mark here too let me know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

Really? that sounds a bit strange... haven't seen that happening here before.
It's not like mods make money for the number of posts on their board :)

Edit: Or DO THEY??! - the plot thickens

It's a govenerment conspiracy i tells ya. Conspiracy! They're all out to steal my bloody chickens......

Achilles, there is a brilliant little program for doing particle effects here: http://www.wondertouch.com/default.asp
you can use it for better beam effects.

    Rough example here

Thanks man i've seen that before. I never bothered getting it tho cus i want the full version. I hate using demo or incomplete software...
