3.3 volt dropping to 2.96

I'v got an ASUS A7V8X motherboard, with an Athlon XP3000. The athlon is realitivly new but since getting it the 3.3 voltage has gone haywire. I don't have another chip to test it against but left ignored the system will force a reboot. It never seems to get over about 3.1/3.2 and mostly it sits just above 2.98.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this. I mean i didn't think the 3000 would require any extra power.

What cpu were you using? Faster processors generally need more power. A new good power supply should fix it.

maybe your psu was dieing anyway and it has nothing to do with changing processor

    i recomend something like this
    http://www.hitide.ie/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/104?osCsid=89bbfd6a7be4cb07fa495774ec8b5db4
pricey but a very stable psu

Had an XP2000 and have a 350W PSU. All other voltages are running fine no problems.

well as far as i know the 3.3 rail is used for processor, AGP , ram and motherboard power supply
so it would seem its not able for the new processor

a rating of 350W means nothing unless its a good make, what make is it?
looks like you might have to buy a new one

Hehe, sense another case of Qtec here ;)

I was under the impression that the 1.75 volt was to do with the cpu.

Not sure of the make of the PSU but I'll look tonight and post back but I don't think its Qtec anyhow.

I am however running all my devices of one cable set for netness. The graphics card is however being run from this powere cable also.

Been busy with exams of late but anyhow I've got a Macron MPT-301 PSU 300W.

    So anyone have any suggestions?

Would you be able to borrow a decent PSU off somebody and see how that goes? The likes of antec/enermax/zalman make top quality ones.

The PSU just isint able to handle the added power of the Xp3000+ , poping in a decent power supply should fully sort you out. try www.pc-look.com and look at the 300w fortrons (they produce 350w+ and will power your system easily)......... there pretty cheap for a very decent PSU. or www.hitide.ie for a quieter solution with good quality also.

No just think its not powerfull enough, thats all. Worked a dream when I had the XP2000 in it.

Anyone want to reccomend a new PSU????

Anything from fortron, antec, thermaltake, sparkle will do you good. 350w from any of these brands will be plenty.

allow me to add cheiftec and zalaman to that list.

Apparently the bequiet! ones they sell on hitide are good too. I have an antec myself, it certainly does the trick.

Komplett.ie only seem to sell qtec and Hiper. Are Hiper any good?

Tagan, Enermax, Antec would be my first preference for a new psu.
    nice psu roundup here

I get the feeling your a little confused, it's not necessarily a bad thing if your 12 volt line is below 12 volts. The important thing is that it's stable and doesn't fluctuate under load and if it does, it only does so very, very marginally!

mine are as follows on a 480W Antec:

    +3.3 - 3.28
    +5.00 - 4.95
    +12.00 - 11.90
    -12.00 - -11.90
    -5.00 - -4.98

    Solid as a rock :)

Ordered the chieftec from the UK anyway.
I reckoned Hiper would be at least noisy, and possibly crap as well. That roundup suggest I was right...

I remember someone mentioning chieftec's not being great, can't say as I've never used them myself :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Col_Loki

Chieftecs are ok, there sorta mid level PSU's. There simular to the thermaltake PSU's.

Wouldnt rate them as highly as Antec, Fortron, Zalman, Be-quiets, Enermax, PCP&P etc etc but there much better than q-tecs , codegans and that.

All my voltages would fluctuate and only slightly like yours bar one the 3.3 which as i said drops to about 2.94. The Software provided by ASUS starts to beep at me. When somthing beeps I don't think its good so i worry.

Anyhow new PSU being ordered on next payday which should be this Friday, something along the lines of Antec or Fortron but more then likely Zalman or Be-quiets about the 450W range.

The 380w Antec/Be-quiet would be fine for your system and would have loads of room for extra components.
The 250w Fortron / Zalman would also be plenty (as they produce more power than rated for).

If your thinkin about using your PSU for your next upgrade then it might be a wise choice or it might not be........... all depends on how the BTX standard goes (ie when it comes in, the uptake of it, compatability etc etc)
