    Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card (old one is going dodgy). Most of the new cards are AGP 8x. My motherboard only supports AGP 4x.

Can I use the AGP 8x card in my AGP 4x slot ? I know I won't get the full performance, but will it work as good as can be expected ? Will it work at all ?

Any recommended cards to get ??

    Thanks.

The 8x card will work in the 4x slot. There will be a performance difference but nothing major.

At the moment your looking at a performance drop of about 0.5-1%.

I suppose a 9800pro would be slightly above your pricerange, but it would be the best buy i suppose. If you want a week or so, i would expect the price to drop a bit more, considaring the X800's will become more mainstream.

If you get a 9800pro, get one of those artic cooling solutions for it, and then you should be able to overclock it and gain some extra free performance easily.

I want a graphics card with TV in/out (since I do some video editing).

My monitor is TFT so I need a DVI connection also.

In or around 200 is fine.

Thanks for that, but the RADEON 9800 Pro doesn't seem to support video in. In fact I can't find a Radeon that does do video in.

Looks like I might have to go for something like GeForce FX5900XT or something similar.

Errr ... why would I buy two cards when I can just buy one that does the whole job ? Besides, I don't have enough free slots in my PC. I only want to replace my graphics card.

Yes, the Radeon looks good, but it just doesn't do what I need, unfortunately.

the 5900XT would be a better card then the 9600 XT if you have to go for it and they typically overclock well.

If you're looking for a Radeon that does TV in then look at the AIW(All In Wonder) cards which have TV in/out and TV tuner. Very nice cards!!

I have a 9000 Pro AIW - old but matches your requirements of 4x AGP and tv/in out and can probably be got for sub 100 euro - I use it as a HTPC to record mpeg 2 from tv and play dvds

What kinda Spec PC are you running it on?

Is an ASUS A7N8X, 512 ram with a Barton 2500xp chip and the 9000 Pro AIW - I have attempted to take out as mush fan noise as possible by using some zaldman gear /// flower cpu cooler and a vga heat sink - to be honest the machine is probably over spec-ed for mpeg2 capture but...I have been know to use it as an extra ut2004 machine every once and a while ;)

    Well, I ordered a FX5900XT card. I don't need a TV tuner, but do need video in/out.

    Thanks for the advice folks.
