US Robotics 56k modem problems

I put together my new rig a few months ago and have being waiting for my dad to put in a phone socket so as I can connect to the net. I had bought a brand new US Robotics modem as it was recommended highly by a mate who used to work tech support for eircom. It doesn't work. My dad fitted a new phone socket last night but as soon as I plug the cable from modem to socket, the dial tone on every phone in the house is gone. I remember having the same problem with this modem last summer when I was trying to get it to work in a shop but I thought it was something to do with their phone system. I ended up bringing 2 of these US Robotics modems back and now it looks like I'm gonna have to bring a 3rd back! Any ideas? It's a V.92 capable modem and it seems to be working fine hardware wise as it returns a result when you query it. I don't need to put in that ms= string yet. The phone lines are dropped when I just connect the modem to the phone system. Weird.

Is the modem connected to the PC at the time or are you just plugging it into the phone socket and not to the PC?

Have you many other devices on the line, particularly phones with displays (the non-portable kind)? Try plugging out all other phones and trying again.

When the cable is connected from the modem to the phone socket on the wall, the phone system in the house is dead. There are 2 house phones, the main one in the hall and one in the bedroom. My dad installed a new phone socket for me last night beside my pc and it works as he tested it for a dial tone. I know for sure it's the modem. I just wanted to find out if anyone has had this problem before.

I had this problem before in my old house. Something to do with the internal wiring. I had to change the modem for a different model. If the one you have has 2 phone ports at the back (line in and line out) then get the modem with only the line in. or vice versa.

    My old thread

Thanks for that link. Yeah, I'm having exactly the same problem. The thing is, I'm having this problem with the same modem that solved your problems, an internal US Robotics modem and it only has 1 port/line in on it. I'll be bringing it back to get a cheaper one. The catch is that I don't have the receipt anymore as my dad sent it off to his accountant to get the VAT back so I'll have some job getting a new modem in PC World but I'm madddddd:mad:

the modem that solved my problem was an external usrobotics with one port.

PC world will be able to look up your receipt for you (as lon as it is within a reasonable length of time since you bought it) as long as you know when you got it, how you paid for it and what name is on the receipt. Its all computerised and they can search by the product code of the item bought.

EDIT: Just remembererd, the internal sitecom modem worked for me in the house where the problems were. Worked well too. Was about 30 quid at the time i think.

Cheers. I'll be bringing it back on Thursday. I still have the box so hopefully they'll be able to scan in the barcode. Sitecom modem you say. I'll have a look for it when I'm there. Thanks again

Is your modem isa or pci? I had a isa usr modem about two years ago and the only time it would work correctly is if I had an adaptor which split the telephone cable from 4 down to 2 wires at the modem

    telephone wires
    \
    > splitter
    > usr modem
    > splitter
    > usr modem
    \
If I used all 4 wires i would if lucky (1)connect(very rare) (2)get constant engaged tone

    hth
