Here boyz, without screaming "YOU NOOB YOU SHOULD USE FIREFOX OR OPERA" or something at me, anyone got any ideas as to why my iexplore.exe frequently does it's nut and uses 99 CPU until I end task it, even if I have no IE windows open?

Have you got it fully upgraded, service packs, etc?

Do the usual ad-aware, antivirus rigamarole.

    OMG you've obviously been HAx0reD.

Well maybe there's some spyware running on your machine? Try runnning adaware ...

Does it do it all the time or just now & again? If it's now & again then it could be something like Adobe Acrobat's plugin. Though this'll be loaded only when you look at a .pdf it stays resident & I've seen it send the CPU into 100% on some PC's. Otherwise, I'd follow seamus advice & do a scan for adware.

I just installed a further six "critical update" yokes from Windows Update, but I doubt that'll help because there was only one item that had anything to do with IE and it was a security patch I think. PC is clean as far as virii and spyware goes too. Maybe I'll just use firefox or opera :P

Kobie - yep, happens frequently but not all the time.

    Uninstall flash and Adobe Acrobat.

Failing that, move to Firefox, homeboy.

This happens to me as well but I'm using Firefox. As soon as I end firefox.exe it's fine again. As well as that is Firefox really slow when saving pictures for anyone else?

Current (beta!) version of Firefox doesn't seem to cope that well for me with using a lot of memory (200MB+). It gets very slow sometimes almost to the verge of crashing

Having said that, I still love it to bits :)

After using Netscape et. al., I went to IE back in '95  and have occasionally tried the alternatives, always preferring IE to them. Only on Firefox since late last year now and using it permanently now.

    Tabs rule :D

Yea tabs are great, but the freezing up and hogging memory is really annoying
