Tele2 ad on Sky Digital

Ok this is a really strange one, and probably a bit OT for this forum but I though there may be a few more knowledgeable people in here that may be able to spread a few thoughts on my predicament.

I have a 32" Windscreen Panasonic TV that has recently started to turn itself to stand-by on its own. I suspected at first that it was a faulty remote but I have ruled that out and surprisingly found the culprit to be a TV ad for Tele2!!

Each time the ad comes on within about 5 seconds the TV turns off. If you are familiar with the ad, it is mostly a red screen (with really annoying music) it runs across a lot of the Entertainment Channels particularly Discover H&L and Living. Is it possible that the red is some how affecting the infrared remote sensor?

Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

I am absolutely sure it is that ad; it did it 5 times yesterday at the same point in the same ad and not once at any other point during the day.

Before you say anything I am absolutely sure it is not anyone messing with the remote.

Wow, that is indeed a wierd phenomenon!

Hard to know whether all the bright red is turning off the TV or just that maybe the guns can't handle so much red and shut down TV as a safety measure?

Suggest you record it and see if the replay triggers the event. That way you control the event for a test.

A lot of Telvisions have a stand by mode when there is no signal, but on my telly its a plain blue screen and it would have to be on for at least a couple of minutes before it would go into stand by.

byte - sounds like your explanation is the most likely one. I have a sony 32" widescreen tv (FX68) and, if I set the contrast up too high, and watch something with lots of vibrant, bright colours, or very flashy images (eg. a gunfight in a film), my TV shuts down into standby, presumably to prevent the TV from blowing up!!! Id say the panasonic thing is a safety precaution.

What type of signal do you feed your TV? PAL (composite) or RGB?
Is your contrast/colour set quite high?
Does the picture tube make any whining or "screeching" or loud buzzing sounds when displaying the image?

Does it do it to anything else?

RGB via Scart from a Panasonic Digibox

Contrast and colour are about 2/3 on the TV and Contrast is set to medium on the Picture settings of the digibox.

Screeching and buzzing, yep occasionally that high pitched buzzy noise and a tap on the top of the TV sorts that out. Mind you it hasn’t done that for a few weeks. That is the only thing out of the ordinary that it ever does.

I will dig out my VHS from the attic and see if I can record the ad and try to duplicate the phenomenon :ninja:

Thanks for all the replies guys, keep them coming.

Try setting input as Composite (PAL) as opposed to RGB. Some TV's cannot handle the large voltages sent by RGB especially if the picture is very bright. Maybe reduce the panasonic tv's contrast level. Try watching your TV through an RF lead for a while (I know it's only mono, but it might help).

Cheers PK, Ill give it a go. Mono isnt a problam as I have a surround sound system so dont even use the volume on the TV. Ill try Composite first and see how i goes, typical that the advert hasnt been on since I put the post up LOL

    Sorry to post again,

That screeching sound sounds a little strange. Is your TV by any chance a 100 Htz, or a flatscreen? TV's generally shouldn't make that screeching sound reported, unless there is a fault. Especially since tapping the TV fixes it!!!

It hasn’t actually made the buzzing sound for a while, but just about 5 minutes ago the ad came on again and the TV switched right off on Que. I changed the input to PAL last night and dropped the contrast down a bit unfortunately it still seems to be a problem.

I’ll dig out the VHS tomorrow and see if I can catch that ad again, it seems to be on a lot in the daytime.

Sorry I forgot the other bit it is a 50hz widescreen, not quite flat screen, the model mumber is TX-32DK1L I think the TV is about 5/6 years old.
