I'm new to the whole linux thing, some might remeber me asking which distro is best to start with!
Well i got my hands on the new mandrake 10.
Haven't really used it much as of yet but i think i will gradually start using it more.

I was playing some mp3's in it but didn't really like the player so i went looking for something else and came up with XMMS.
BUT, how do i install it? I take it installing apps isn't as easy as in windows??

    Hope someone can help me?

    Jozi

    and type

    urpmi xmms

it should prompt you for cd

or you can get an rpm from here when u do a search

I don't use Mandrake, but as far as I know it is RPM based. If I remember correctly the command you're looking for is 'urpmi'. Google it and you should be able to find some decent tutorial for it.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will post and give you some proper advice (and possibly correct me :)). Hopefully the above will give you something to play with until they do.

[EDIT] Someone beat me to it. :)

Using the kde menu (just like Windows start menu) go to configuration then packaging then install software put in your admin password then search for xmms it will find a few results click on them then choose install it will prompt for your cd's.

I find that's one of the easiest ways to do it when you're starting out.

Yea, do like Ste says. If you have the three (or is it 4?) Mandrake 10 CD's, there is a lot of software on them - including XMMS.

In fact, if you installed from the CD's I'd be supprised if XMMS isn't already on your machine. Have you tried just typing xmms in the console?

It's 3 cd's. I can't remember if xmms is in the menu under multimedia or not or wheter they renamed it to something else.

But using the console when first starting out is daunting.
Taken me a few weeks to get used to the whole configure make install routine.

For the moment tho get used to using the menu's and gui's.
Then when comfortable with that start compiling. It's not as hard as you would think.

I find it easier now I've wiped Windows from my pc. I used to always go running to it when something went wrong. Still having a few problems myself.

Just a quick slightly off topic question. Do you guys new to linux still find yourselves always using the GUI / menu stuff? Or venturing to the command line more and more?

I still run windows a lot (thanks to required non-linux software and intermittent hardware problems) but under linux I often don't even launch a GUI for hours, or if i do I immediately start a konsole or equivalent.

This is just a matter of interest and in no shape or form meant to be in any ways insulting, derogatory, trolling, flaming or superior-minded.

I like the gui's but as time progresses I'm using the console more and more. I've 2 open atm. Usually more tho. A few programs even with gui's require the console to be open with is quite good to find out what's going on in the background.
