Windows or Processor?

I have my computer all up and running with an Athlon 1800+ running at stock speeds, on an Epox 8k9ai motherboard.

When i put in an XP 2500+ (which the board should be able to handle with ease), the chip registers correctly, and the speed is correct, but in windows the performance drops hugely. When i put the 1800+ back in, the performance increases (even thought the 1800+ is slower than the 2500+ by over 300mhz).

Would a reinstall of windows XP solve that, or is it a problem with the processor? I don't want to reinstall windows if i can help it.

Did you install all your motherboard drivers etc? Sure that the Xp2500+ is running @ 1.83ghz? Is it a stability issue mabye?

Yea, reinstall the chipset drivers. Reformatting might not solve the problem. Wanna find out exactly the problem before ya do that. Yer head be wrecked if it dont solve it

windows reinstalled, a lot snappier. Hoping to install firewall before i get a virus... brb

EDIT: Yup, i just finished a windows reinstall (on my new empty hardrive) and it's working perfectly. Thank god it did, or else i would have went spare! Also, the ethernet port that mysteriously stopped working has now magically started working again! Isn't that nice.

Install SP1 and get the rest of windows updated. Blaster and Sasser wont bother you then

I got my firewall installed so i'm perfectly safe for the moment, but first thing tomorrow morning i'll be getting all those updates. For the moment my computer can rest, its been through a LOT lately.
