just wondering what everyones view is on the amount of large epic style historical films been made like 3 LOTRs(LOTRs i am sure happen! its to belivable), alexander the great, king arthur, and going back further micheal collins, braveheart, titanic, gladiator, saving private ryan and many more i cant think of, my view is that its great to see the era of large scale cinema coming back, agreed films like micheal collins was loosely based on the truth at but it still gets kids interested in irish history

Well I like them but I would concerned at the lack of accuracy in many of them. For example how many vietnam movies have you seen where the US loses the battle? I've been told that Braveheart for example get a number of things wrong. Personally I prefer a lot of the older b&w british war movies like the cruel sea or dunkirk which while obviously very patriotic they stay closer to the truth. If you are going to make a move and not stick to the truth, then I say you might as well make a movie like Where Eagles Dare or Kellys Heros. Obviously while not a film, Band of Brothers has been the best thing on TV in a long time. But obvously its a lot harder to get all the facts in a movie as its shorter.

A lot of the time the film/movie makers are using histrorical facts as a crutch because they have weak scripts, or more acurately the studios are not willing to take a risk on a film but instead have to a Hollywood gloss on everything, even if it means changing historical facts.

LOTR is as close to reality as some of these films.
